I need 2 1000gph submersible pumps. What company would you guys recommend? Anyone in the north that carries a good one in the store at a reasonable price?

thanks

I have a Mag 9.5. Not quite 1000gph but close. I have had it running for two years now without a problem. I haven't ever even taken it out to clean it in two years. I also think it is pretty quiet. People complain about the noise of these but I guess I don't hear it. I also have a mag 7 on my skimmer that has been running for over two years and no problem. I think they are well made pumps.

magdrives or quietones for me. i have used both with great results. i would put the quietones a notch above mag for being slightly quieter/less vibration.

I am also happy with my mag12. it runs very quiet, almost silent. I had a mag 7 though that was the complete opposite, very noisy.

I have switched over to the quiet ones from the mags. The quiet ones use less wattage, don't use metal screws that rust and strip out, cost less plus they are quiet.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I should get one of each!

How often do you guys change your pumps? I lose impellars from time to time. They seem to swell up. The latest is the pump must have froze and the cord slowly melted down, poisoned out some of my fish... dang. Everytime you think things are gona start rolling along, something kicks you in the nads..

I prefer mags as well...quiet ones seem to have a great reputation and are considerably cheaper though. I run 2 mag7's in my sump and couldn't be happier.

why does everyone like the mags so much? they are noisy and give off lots of heat.

why not go with the quiteone like was recommended

I need two. Both seem to be recommended. Both have 4-5 stars. I've had both. I'll install both of them and date them. Have my own little test. The website said the both draw about the same amount of power, so they probably are pretty close on heat.

The bad thing is what it has done to my tank. The corals, as few as there were are having a hard time.. dang. I guess it disolved some of the copper wire and rubber. I'm changing more water tomorrow. One of the pumps was a Dolphin and it was probably only a year old. The impellar was all swollen up and it would kind of spin, but it was hit or miss. The other was a Rio.. What do I expect....

If I can make time I'll take photos and summarize the grand arrival! Trials and tribulations of installation, etc.

Good to have a Merman on the subject!

for one, the magdrive pumps are readily available and are usually the first pump a newbie ever has any experience with. they are trustworthy, which usually outweighs some of the negatives from them.
i have to say that i ran a mag 5 and a mag7 on a couple past tanks and really didnt get much heat from them at all. at this point, i wish my quietone3000 gave off more heat because my sump heater has been working overtime with the cold weather. my tank is hooked up to a acjr set to make the tank temperature fluctuate with the seasons. it is running at 78 deg. now and most of the time, the heater is on. it is great in the summer because with my house at 76-78, my tank stays right at 81 where the acjr wants it. most of my heat i contribute to the 250w MH in the canopy.
