A few weeks ago I stopped at quite a few Metro-Detroit LFS while on the road for work (I work for myself, so I wasn't cheating!), here are the stores that I stopped at and a short review...
Oceans and Seas: Large store, always seem to have their coral tanks full, fish selection seems to be hit-or-mis, make sure you go after they get a shipment... Coral prices seem high but they have excellent prices on fish.
Stingray Bay: Nice store, great selection of live stock, prices seem average, staff is very helpful.
Reef Soloutions: Staff is great, this is a brand new store so I only saw their coral tanks full of stock, no fish while I was there but I understand their tanks are full now.
Amazon Stingrays: Kind of an odd location but their prices make up for it! Very nice staff and where else can you get a Blue Spot Jawfish for $59 (I thought it was a misprint but was assured the prices were correct!)
SeaShells: Sorry to read that they're closing up shop but I wasn't impressed. Tanks all looked like they needed some work, I felt the prices were fairly high. Really nice display tank with a nice fat Mandarin and Copperband Butterfly (where do you ever see that?)
Aquarium Shine: Nice little store, decent selection, prices seemed average, staff was attentive.
Choice: Decent sized store, lots of livestock. I thought most of the prices were very high like $199 for a Burgess Butterfly that I bought a couple of weeks earlier at another LFS for $99... I went there to look at a specific fish that I called them about and almost felt pressured to buy the fish once
I was in the store. I left the store with out it...
Kee's: Staff is really nice, good sized store with a ton of dry goods as well as livestock, their tank always seem to be full of fish and corals that seem to be priced well plus you can always find coupons somewhere...
Just my take on things... -Steve
