Recommendations for centerpiece fish?

Yeah Carpenters fairy wrasse. I was not implying he worked there. He has made that clear. I was just saying why would anyone want to work at a regular LFS with a degree like that. It is two different worlds.

Oh. I saw one in a store last week. It was really giving a unicorn the business. I figured it'd do the same to mine since it's the same size as the other unicorn.

Bluejaw trigger--the only "reef safe" trigger. Hmm.......definitely a nice looking fish. What were they asking?

Most consider the Pink Tail Trigger to be reef safe as well. Although with your clams I would not put any trigger in the tank

That doesn't narrow things down much, and I don't think ever seen a fairy wrasse bigger than 4"

OK... guilty as charged... specifically there are several large fairy wrasses to choose from. I have a male Cirrhilabrus rubrisquamis (Rosy Scale Wrasse) in my 120 reef that is about 4" in size. Very pretty and quite active. Here's a link: http://www.marinecenter.com/fish/wrassereefsafe/rosyscalesfairywrasse/

I got mine from Key's Island for under $100. He gets along well with my Mystery Wrasse. My Mystery came from a diver/collector and cost about the same.

My biggest tank is three thousand seven-hundred gallons. I thought you knew that already though? I was sure I told you somewhere along the line. About the jacks under the floor boards and cutting out the drywall and what not to get it in.

I think I finally found a buyer for it in Wyoming though.

WOW... What are the dimmensions of that tank, and how did you get it in there? Did you take precautins for mold as the humidity would be out of this world. What thickness of glass or acrylic is it? Maybe some of us fellow reefers would like a setup like that. I know I am interested. Maybe you have a buyer here in Colorado.

Also, is this where you have bread your Maximas clams over 30 times? I am very interested.

Rob, they have a red velvet fairey at Mr. Aqua in the springs. I had one, but he did jump. (my fault) Dan doesn't want to spend that much ($139) I don't think.

Now I am very interested if Keys is selling them for under $100. That is one of my favorite fairy wrasses.

I only bread my clams once, before they hit the deep fry.

Sorry Todd,

I couldn't resist.

All wrasses jump. All blue throat triggers LOVE to eat clams (any bivalve - oh sorry, scalloppy type thingy). The Harlequin Tusk I would not recommend because it nearly depletes all ability to keep inverts what so ever. Granted they do not get THAT big compared to other fish, but they will crush shells because they can. <Yawn> also schooling mid water column feeders, is really not a good idea for a tank that size just IMO.

Robert, I used to like my clams breaded, but I've moved on to raw oysters. Add a drop of tabasco and it's delicious, like bloody phlegm on the half-shell. MMMMMMMMMM!

He was $120 less a 20% sale... which brought him under the $100 mark.

They come in fairly often.... but usually smaller and without the Super Male coloration.

I'd say that's pretty accurate. I think my biggest concern about spending so much on a single fish is the possibility it'll die because of something I did/didn't do. I'm not that confident in my fish husbandry abilities to take that kind of financial risk yet.

The day I win the lottery is the day I buy that monster 10,000 gallon custom tank with all the coolest fish (and an employee who's responsible to scrape the coralline off all that glass).

Scratch that. The day I win the lottery is the day I buy houses in the Caribbean and Pacific and go diving every day. No feeding. No skimmer. No cleaning. No water changes!

Well you could end up becoming food, then there would be need for a water change, not to mention the fish that ate you would probably die, better off not playing the lottery.

I don't think doing a water change on the ocean would be cheap or easy. Where do you get that much RO? They frown on seeding clouds nowadays. And I'm not spending my lotto winnings on IO either.

So back to the thread. I'm still learning about the fish everyone recommended, and weighing the comments pro/con about each.

The negative factor regarding fairy wrasses is the jumping. How high do they jump? If I have 12-inch sides on my open top canopy, will they still get out?

So far, I haven't heard anything potentially negative about the pyramid butterfly. Anyone have direct experience with them?

Once again not true...you cannot say all, because these fish are planktivores. They would not naturally feast on bivalves in nature.

Just to add...I know a few people who have kept these fish for years without incident to their clams. I kept sargassums for over a year without a thought to my clams.

Who are these people that have kept these triggers with clams? Could you PM Crit with their numbers so that he can call and talk to them about their agression patterns. Not me, Crit. The only reason that I ask is because I have seen them eat clams. So PMing Crit with their phone numbers would help so he can find out what to do to prevent it.

Crit, let me know how it works out. I would be interested to be there when you introduce him to the tank.

Thanks
