ok, im looking for 900+ gph. anyone have any experiance with any pumps in this range which is semi affordable? thanks
max

danner mag seems to be the cheapest most reliable. if you are looking for the most reliable go for an eheim or iwaki external

i've had a bad experiance with the Mag 9.5. I used to have 1 in my 100gal and it was loud and clicky. was thinking of ehiem but they are pricey. anyone ever used quiet one before?

I agree with Mark a mag 9.5 would be perfect for what your looking for. I used one on a 72 gal bowfront and it was awesome!!

I have had mixed experience with Mag pumps. I have a few that have failed on me, but my Mag 9.5 has been great through. Overall, I haven't been impressed with Mag's reliability.

I have a mag 9.5 for my 90 return and I use a mag 7 for my chiller. I do not even notice the sound. The people who have come to see my tank always says that my tank is so quiet...

Karl,

Are all of the Eheim pumps reliable? I have replaced two Mag2 pumps on my calcium reactor. The next time it fails, I might look at a new pump (Eheim 1250).

BTW - I just noticed that most of the Mag pumps have three year warranties. I might have to make a call tomorrow. :D

Can't go wrong with the reliability and craftsmanship of an Eheim 1262;)

The mag 18 I used put out a lot of heat - more than desirable. If i had to do it again, I'd use anything external. The downside is the general expense and room necessary to install one. I would concur regarding the Iwaki recommendation.

I clicked on the "more information" link, and saw the following

"NOTE: The maximum operating depth for the pump is approximately 3 feet (1 meter) below the surface of your aquarium's water, whether installed externally or submerged."

But yet the "max head" of the smallest pump was 8.5ft.

yea, i was looking for some specs but only found the gph, and wattage. are there at the LFS???

refugee: yep that was kinda strange as well.

If you go with the Eheim 1250, be sure that you're getting one with the white ceramic shaft, and not the grey carbon shaft. The latter will only give you about a year on a calcium reactor before the shaft needs to be replaced.

I'm pretty sure all the Mag pumps have a ceramic shaft, too, but seem to be very brittle for some reason.

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I bought a tank with a Via Aqua Pump. About a year later, the pump crapped out and I frantically looked for another one to use as a replacement. I found another Via Aqua and figured I didn't have to worry about it for awhile.

Well, about a year later, the 2nd one crapped out and I had to frantically scramble for another replacement.

This time, I bought a Ehiem. Not only is it much more quiet than the Via Aqua; but, it's already lasted much longer than the other pumps.

As you know, when your main pump goes out, you have to scramble fast. Both times I rigged up a Hagen 802 power head to give me some circulation between the sump and the tank.

Having a crappy pump go out on you is the pits.

Best of luck,

Roy
