Recommended fuge light.

When I was setting up my fuge in Septmeber and october, I read a thread in the DIY forum that praised a screw in style (household) compact bulb. So I used it. I was sure that I used the EXACT sku in the forum, and my cheato is as weak as it can be.

Strong cheato is... well strong, not brittle, and almost has a waxy color to it, not pale and dull.

I am looking for a good light recomendation, as I need to replace it sooner than later.

Any good ideas?

i got mine at menards. works well. Stigmatic uses the same bulb. its one of those spiral type bulbs encased in a typical flood light housing. It was one of the "120 watt equivalant" bulbs which only uses like 40 watts. Keeps my chaeto growing nice and healthy. I replace my bulb ever 4-5 months since my fuge is lit 24/7

I'll look at the exact brand name when i get home

I was using 2 of these guys...

I was running them 24/7 as well, but my ph is not staying stable at night... quite the opposite, it dips terribly. I gave up trying to buffer it daily. I'm dumping 7 teaspoons of krud (SeaChem Ph maint.) per day to keep it up... That can't be good.

I use the same light Jason and my cheato is fading by the day. I am thinking about actually trying a grow light with full sun spectrum. I could care less if it makes the tank bloom as it is not plumbed to the main tank any longer. If it works I will let you know.

Yes, the were. ...I know, hmmmmm I have a retro for regular florescents, do you think some 18" 6500ks for F/S would work???

i posted your ? in the lighting/filteration forum and the was prob.12 hits you might want to check out it sounds like 6500k is whats popular? Andrew

Thanks, looks like the front runners are:

http://www.lightsofamerica.com/floods.htm
LIGHTS OF AMERICA... or LOA - buy online for 35$ but I'm stopping at HD on my way home.

and

2850K PC floodlight at Menards for like $6.

Side note... when I printed the specs for the LOA bulb, looks like its available in different sizes and housing colors.

The model being used in ther thread, if you dig enough, was the 9265. (White fixture)

It appears that this is a 65W bulb with the incandescent equivalent of 500 W.

About 4550 lumens

OK for damp use (outdoor) -

The lamp is replaceable with part # 9166B

Standard 120V

AND it's 6,500 K color temp.

Oh, and it IS Energy Star rated for those of you with newer homes and the energy concerned.

(part 9027 is the 27W/150W 6500k version)

Special thanks to The Iceman... All I did was retype the info, he had the insight to put the post in the right place.

no prob. i'm still a newbie. let me know how much it runs you$?looks like we now have more posts and threads than wrs club. i think thats a pretty big thing.its just awsome to be able to talk reef tanks to some people that are willing to listen lol not like the wife and coworkers ( they all go ohh ok) lol andrew

I rewired a regular wall plug on my LOA light. I plugged it in last night. It gets warm, and until I trust it not burning the house down.... I will run it only while I am home. I may wire it for a fan. So far it ran 39.95 at Home depot. They had the white and the brown casing... both are the same, so I went with the white.

I will keep everyone posted.

It does look nice though.

I know this thread is kind of old... BUt, I wanted to share a bulb that I found locally and fairly inexpensive and easy to obtain.

I was too lazy to look for the LOA bulb, so I went to Menard's and found a 13 watt flourescent in daylight spectrum. The package is blue and they cost about $4 or $5 in the single pack. I think that you can get a four pack for like $9 when they are on sale.

I bought a simple clamp on style dish reflector in the lighting section for another $5 and gave it a whirl.

The cheato just took off since Ive been using this bulb! So much so that I decided to buy another to get light evenly across the entire fuge (20 long).

I dont know how much this will help you guys. BUt, its on the cheap and I am very happy with the results.

Feit electric is the brand

It is a blue insert in the packaging. The also make a bulb that will replace a 100w regular.

The best part...... There's a sticker on the packaging for a $2 mail in rebate on the bulb!

Hey Dan,
I did not have any problem finding the LOA fixture, it does have a slightly larger than standard mougle screw in connector though, so it did not fit in the system I painstakenly set up.

I found it at HD, on the isle with all the exterior lights. Fixture and bulb ran about 35$.

Hey, is your Oneida location OK? I heard the scanner call for the lightning strike the other night.

Arby's is but a memory for me.

I have moved on to another aspect of the restuarant world.

If you want to know more, send me a PM.

Its good to know that the LOA light is easy to find. I suppose if I would break my routine of going to menard's and venture out beyond my comfort zone, I would have had luck finding it.

It seems to be growing cheato ok, better than the one's I was using, those spiral bulb that Melv Recommended. I really liked that LOA bosted ALL the specs on the box and the instructions. Especially the 6500K part for someone like me who second guesses 40$ purchases that are a leap of faith. I wouldn't be doing well at all if Korey hadn't given me a HUGE wad of his.

I just pulled all my bio balls on Wednesday. I am still having a huge problem with GHA. Thought the new halides would fix it. The spectrum in the compacts was pertty bad.

We should stay in touch, that way I don't keep looking for you in the background between the Beef and Cheddar and the French Dip. :D

Hope all is well for you.

Jason

I beleive the spiral bulb i'm using is 2300K. I tried this one a few months back when i read here that chaeto prefers a red spectrum. Seems like it works well compaired to a higher kelvin bulb.
