rectangle vs cube

Right now I have a 4'x4' reef tank. I plan to move soon, and upgrade either right before or right after the move. My current tank is acrylic, and I hate it. Glass is so much easier to clean. So that's my biggest reason to upgrade, but bigger is always better.

My dream was to do a 2' wide, about 30 inch high tank as long as possible, built into a wall and viewable from both sides.

Now a used 300dd is available at a good price, and I am rethinking if I really want a long, thin tank. I am more into coral than large fish and am worried a long thin reef tank will look like some planted trees in a row.

For those with experience with large reefs, which way should I go? Is 2' enough room to aquascape, no matter how long the tank? Or am I going to regret not having width later?

IMO, 2' is plenty of room to aquascape, it does take a bit of finesse to aquascape thinner tanks.

That said my first wide tank was a 180 that was 3' wide, and I loved every minute of it and my next tank was even wider at 6' wide (or 5' depending upon which direction you look :D). That's not to say there aren't issues with wide tanks either, flow can be a bit tricky, as can surface skimming.

You said as "long as possible" if you could do a 15 foot long pane you could get a definite wow factor, however if you stick with the same volume as the 300DD, then you'll only have a 8' tank, which is hardly that much better than the DD's 6' length.
