i have this dark red algae growing ont he top of my sandbed. it grows little bubbles and floats to the top. could this be red slime?

Sounds like red slime (cyanobacteria) to me, but there are other possibilities. The treatment is about the same, in any case.

Red slime it is, use some redslime remover to rid it temporarily and get those phospates to 0. You may want to invest in a phosban reactor150, they are only around 30 -40 dollars on dr phostors and smith website. Goodluck!!!

No, DON'T use red slime remover...that stuff is crap. what are your params? phosphates, nitrates? are you using ro/di water? how is the water flow in your tank? these are all things that contribute to this. how often do you change your water and how much?
