Red Algae on Elegance Coral

Any idea what this is and how I get rid of it?

Thanks!

The polyp seems very healthy though. I do know I have some flatworms mixed in there that I am getting ready to zap once again with flatworm exit but I don't know what the bubble type algae is. I have seen a picture of grape algae but not sure if this is it. I am moving to a new tank and will quarantine/dip all of my corals first but I need to know what I am dealing with here.

Thanks!

what a simple easy cure, remove, paint on peroxide, wait, rinse, reinstall all dead in a week. Localized on the skeleton thats easy to hit.

The invasion has nothing to do with nutrients. You can place that coral as is with the invader on it in the cleanest SPS system here and it will still grow. easy kill, post follow up pics

that rhodophyta invader will take over your tank through fragmentation, zap quickly.

Thanks. So you mean to apply regular hydrogen peroxide?

yes but first pls read the thread for all the associated information, its important to know

its here in nanos forum

google: the history of pico reef biology

You can even do little tricks to avoid taking it out of water

Hold the skeleton out of the water and the polyp under
Use a small paint brush to apply it without dripping much

Let sit two mins, put back in tank no rinse as long as you don't have lysmata cleaner shrimp
If you do have cleaners the external method works wonders in one treatment

+1 to hydrogen peroxide.

Remove coral from tank
Cover algae in peroxide
Let sit in a bucket for 5 minutes with no water
Put coral back in tank
Wait 2-4 dad and algae will be gone
If any remains after 4 days, just repeat

That's some strange algae. Are those things that look like tentacles/polyps fleshy or just bubbles?

Well, I removed the elegance from the tank and brushed on some peroxide so we will see how that works. I can say that the bubbles are full of clear slimy stuff! :D

I just took a peak in my tank and that algae is turning flourescent orange! It looks radio active! :eek1: I will try to get a picture but the polyp is out right now covering it.

Question - should I remove the dead algae from the skeleton?

Thanks!

You should leave it! This discoloration has been documented many times in the thread, its the five day count down

Watch how clean it is by Thursday, prob 90-100%

So predictable

Nice returning polyp extension on the catalaphyllia you treated it right

Nice laser clear pics too

The algae dying in the system is not a big deal. All of the collective nutrients in that mass pale in comparison to a single daily feeding

It makes exceptional pics for you to show the transition between the infected and self cleaning stage

Next up is cuc starting to become attracted to that spot

Keep the pics coming! I'll link it when its bare clean next
week
Peroxide was ideal in this case as you haven't fragmented/spread things around the tank

Any missed areas can be spot treated once more then its perfect.

If any show up in the future, zap em. I apply peroxide to my pico for algae cheats a few times a year.

What's amazing is how clean the spot will be when done. Like it wasnt there, and we don't have to touch it, natural processes will

Regardless of what's been said in the past, actual use of peroxide shows quite an amazing selectivity for targets and an amazing tolerance by the lions share of non targets

Amazing stuff it is, very clean substance to use around the reef. In the very least it removes the need for invader identification and constant searching for natural predators. If a tank has a successful balance there already it may not need a cheat, but for this localized place you had it peroxide was ideal

Here is an updated photo of the treated algae. It is going a bit slower than anticipated but the algae is obviously dying off. Will post again in a few more days.

arrgh I hate missing predictions lol

its on the way though, Ive never seen em recover from those lightened bubbles. was the bottle a new one> just wondering
sometimes peroxide that was cracked open a few mos ago goes a little flat like a dr pepper...thanks for the high res pics, sharp looking

whenever the stuff does die off this will be a heck of a documentation for it.
