Red Algae

Can anybody help me with what this is? What's the best way to clean it? And should I be worried?

Cyanobacteria aka red slime algae. More flow, less phosphate.

yes you should be worried, they sell a additive to kill it and you need more water movement and less phosphate

Take a turkey baster and net and then siphon out the loose particles. Increase power head flow towards tank center and add a product called chemi clean which works well. You may also reduce amount of time lights are on which helps with the battle

Siphon it out during water changes...
Repeat as needed..

Turning lights off for 3 days is also effective..

If you want a chemical route then red slime remover or chemiclean works..follow directions exactly..

More flow can sometimes help but thats rarely as effective as other means...No real proof its from excessive phosphates either..

The key to success with chemiclean is to use double the dose they tell you to use in the the instructions.
I recently used it and it worked like a charm. After 3 days none of the red slime was left and it didn't return since.

I've used it at exactly the recommended rate and been successful quite a few times..
Ive used it at far in excess of the recommended and had it do nothing...

Variables apply and cyano can seem to build a tolerance to it..
