too much nutrient in the water.....cut back on feedings

Typically people will tell you that nuisance algae can be caused by overfeeding, insufficient nutrient-export (skimming), too little flow...to get more help you ought to post what equipment you are running and your water parameters.

can i just clean the tank really well,and cut back on feedings? to take care of it. my water parameters are dead on ARC tested them. i do need a new protien skimmer and another blower for flow tho

That can help....may want to try to slurp most of it out with syphon and then do wc after that to get some of the suspended "snoo" from water column.

A protein skimmer would help a lot.

I had cyano from overfeeding when I moved into my new house. I was busy with other priorities and had neglected my tank for a few weeks and overfed. It was everywhere... I simply cut back on my feedings. I fed them once a day (a very small amount of flake) and the cyano disappeared. I didn't need to remove it. It was just gone one day. I have a ton of flow in my tank so I assume the current just carried it through the overflow. Now I am back to normal feedings and cleanings. Also, how old is your tank? Newer tanks are prone to a lot of different types of algae. Are there air bubbles beneath the algae?

I feel your pain..my 60 has a bad cyano problem I can not shake,No overfeeding,nitrates are close to zero,phos are 1 per ARC test..

I have a pretty good skimmer running on it and even do macro on opposite lighting sceadule..

And now I am getting this nasty red gel type that grows in patches on rocks(never seen it before)

I'm at my wits end with this stuff..

too much overfeeding and not enough flow usually cause it. siphon out what you can, scrub the rocks, hope for the best

is it stringy-like or bubbly? If that makes sense...

stringy on the coral floor,and bubbly on rocks its starting to coat my corals now. is there a product to get rid of this stuff? i only feed once a day. and sometimes every other day. it's driving me crazy! i have a corrila 3 and a 2

red slime remover, but it's really only a temporary fix. how large is your tank. it will come back and most commonly in areas with decreased flow.

what kind of "red algae" is it?

If its cyano, scrub and water changes (less feeding)

If its that red turf stuff, pencil tip urchins and turbo snails seemed to work for me

If it's a relatively new tank setup, this may just be a tank maturing phase. It would be good to blow off the cyno before it gets too close to your corals and siphon out as much of it as you can. Cyno generally develops in low flow areas. You may want to try a day without turning on the lights.
