We have one and he has grown quite a bit. He is around 7" to 9" across tip to tip. And we are having fish missing and can't find them or remains. I was told that they eat fish. So I would like to hear from everyone to see if we need to move him.
I've seen other red brittle stars that were fine. Exactly like mapn said, the only ones I know of that can cause issues are the green serpants. Although I'd probably still keep an eye on him just in case. There are always exceptions.
Green brittle stars are the bastards. I have a yellow one which is less mentioned but has the same spp name as the green one and in the blue light, they look identicle. If the yellow star is not kept well fed, it will find it's own food. One of it's means happen to be one of my black and white clowns.
One night when all the lights were out, I fed my tank and decided to record the star since I liked the way it moves. While chasing down pellets it ran into an electric blue hermit that was doing the same thing.
If it has a small disk (relative to arm length), it should be fine. The green serpant and close relatives/lookalikes have fairly large disks. There are red serpants - so a pic might be helpful.
unfortunately i wasn't told about the green one and i lost losts of fish. he would get them while they sleep in the rocks that or his lil helper the snowflake eel. the only fish i wanted gone was a three stripe damsel but they never did. so they both got traded in. my star was about 12" from arm to arm and the eel about 18" long.
