Red Bugs

So found out yesterday that i've got red bugs....the common solution I have been finding on threads on this forum and a few others is the use of Interceptor. The problem is that I can't find it for sale anywhere online or locally. What other options are there for getting rid of them? Do they only attack specific species of sps? So far they managed to take down about a 3-4 inch birdsnest in a couple days! I have considered getting a Dragon face pipefish...but finding those locally is a pain as well, buy possible. Any help would be great...thanks

I too had a battle with red bugs, i posted an add for Interceptor, and a fellow reefer had some for me, you only need a quater of a pill for treatement... (the way i did it anyway,) but i learned that if you take a picture of your tank, and talk to a vet, there are some vets that will rite a script for ya....

the problem isn't getting a vet to give it to me, its that the vets around me don't even have it...they are saying that its not available for 3-4 months

here is a site that claims you don't need a script and they have it in stock...

and another...

That concerns me, in my little experience in my tank, they didn't touch my birdnest, only my smooth skinned acro's, i was able to pull them out and treat in seperate tank, meanwhile they all died in my tank without a host....

here is a link to my battle thread on another board i hope mods don't mind this.... also if you read farther down the thread, there is a fellow reefer who claimes to have had success with Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer

just so its clear, they Bayer treatment is only a dip. it should not be used as an in tank treatment

From what I read the will not touch birds nest or milli (fuzzy) SPS but acro is fair game for them as the guy stated above Bayer is a out of tank treatment but that is the greatest stuff out there for treating red bugs and eggs must dips will that care of red bugs but not eggs

I took an infested frag to my vet the he gave Ivermection it is also a de wormer like Interceptor. You need a prescription for both. Red bugs will not attack montis, millis or birds nest but any acro is fair game.

It isn't in production anymore. You have to find a local club member or a vet that has it. I only have it cuz my dad stockpiled a bunch

Don't waist you time with the Bayer. It will only slow them down. Be persistent and get some interceptor.

Thats somewhat miss leading. There are plenty of people who claim it has worked out for them. Though it is a bit more time consuming that Interceptor, according to others, it is a viable treatment. I myself am going threw a bayer dip regimen for red bugs and so far so good, though will not know till much later. Remember, Interceptor is no longer in production so acquiring that med. will become increasingly difficult.

Any ideas why they don't make it anymore ?
Anyone know what the active ingredient in interceptor is?

Interceptor is still in production it is just really hard to get right now since there has been a temporary halt in production. Like I said Ivermection can also be used in place of Interceptor they are both de wormers.

The production facility making it in the US had to shut down back in Jan. 2012 so it is almost impossible to find right now. They are supposed to open back up in Jan. or Feb. 2013 and start making it again. There have been several people who have used Interceptor Spectrum to treat their tanks without any problems. Interceptor Spectrum has milbemycin and praziquantel in it. The downside is that Interceptor Spectrum is not sold in the US which makes it harder to get.

I have recently noticed i also have red bugs in my 75 gal display tank. I have five small frags of acros. if i were to put my frags in a 10 gal qt and run interceptor would that take care of my problem? How long can the bugs live without a host in the display? I really dont want to kill all of my pods in my fuge and risk losing my manderins.

I only kept my acros in QT for 7 days, and i havent seen any re appear, it has been a few months now..... and all my acros are doing great!!!

I recently treated my tank for Red Bugs with Interceptor, the Beefy Chewable kind.It wasn't very soluble. It did work though.A word of advice, take your Shrimp and crabs out of the System, as even the lowest dose will kill them.I learned the hard way.Killed my 3 y/o Fire Shrimp.Very Sucky situation.
