Red Bugs

Well after taking pictures of the corals tonight for the auction we have discovered that we now have red bugs. :(

At this time we have not determined if we will be treating with Interceptor or not because right now we have a thriving Mandarin goby, Choati wrasse, and Leopard wrasse who depend on the pod population in our tank for food.

So far we have not noticed any ill effects on the SPS, but if we do we will most likely end up treating at that time.

All frags that we bring on Saturday will be treated with TMPCC and Interceptor prior to leaving here and it would be advised to do your own treatment as well.

Wow, that stinks Erin! Did you notice any in the frag tank? I am about 99.9% positive I don't have them, I have looked over every coral. Maybe they never made it that far.

Actually, they are pretty much only in the frag tank from what we can tell, we have only noticed them on one colony in the main tank so far.

Here is a zoomed-in picture of them. You really can't see them with your naked eye; we wouldn't have seen them if it weren't for Scott's nice new camera. (ugg)

Waah. I guess I'd better get the macro lens out. I'll pick up some Intercepter next week from my vet friend.

Frick Frack Heart Attack!! Sorry to hear.

we wouldn't have seen them if it weren't for Scott's nice new camera.

And isn't he a lucky guy to have a gal who gives nice presents. ;)

When Alex came over and macro'd my tank, we were both checking for da bugs. I swear on most corals it is the only way to tell.

Maybe you could pull that one in the tank, put it in the frag tank, off line the frag tank and interceptor it. Might not totally rid you but it would keep them ay bay and the pods intact.

Fliger- Ya- get some for me too :( hopefully you don't have them but we have only noticed them in the frag tank except for 1 in the main tank so I would treat if I were you.

Clkwrk- no worries. Even if we did get them from you (or anyone else fo that matter) I wouldn't blame you- it's our own fault. But I guess we can swap all we want now huh. I actually don't think we've gotten a frag from you in several months at least.

Kirsten- ya- it sucks. Oh well what can ya do. Unfortunately we can't take the frag tank off line since that has a VERY huge pod population but maybe move them all to the mixingtank for a treatment or 2. Of course that wouldn't be cooled but at least it can be seperated and then dump the water after the treatment and it's probably big enough to treat all the corals in the main tank and the frag tank so that might work.

Yeah I was playing . You guys haven't got anything from me that I know of. But I did owe Erin a frag or 2 for giving me an interceptor pill sometime ago.

Also as they say if you see them in one place the whole tank should be treated if the tank is to be treated.

Sorry to hear and I will be very interested in how you solve this problem. I've been thinking on an isolation tank since the last frag meeting. I'm curious, how long would it take to re-establish a pod colony?

Well the camera once again raises the eternal question of whether or not ignorance is bliss.

I'm not even gonna check - I'm just gonna treat. I feel bad for you guys because of your pod eaters. You will really have to do the carbon/skimmer thing to pull the stuff out, then buy more pods to feed the tank. I have a vet appt next week, I'll pick you guys up a six pack.

I know how you two feel.

Alex found my red bug problems with his nice camera. I would have never found it with my naked eye.

Good luck.

clkwrk- Ya- I know we should treat the whole tank to be sure but at this point that isn't an option. I'm not willing to risk my pod population, and thereby some of my fish population, since right now the corals seem to be doing just fine. Treating all effected corals for now seems like the best step and at the very least should help keep them under control.

ZoeReef- Good point- ignorance is bliss sometimes I guess :). How long will it take to re-establish my pod population? I'm not ready to find out right now :)

Fliger- Cool- thanks for picking some up for us- just let me know what I owe ya. We have 1 pill left right now and that should get everything treated for the auction and some dipping as well for the stuff in the frag tank.

Kirsten- Is that a "just checked" meaning you have them or you don't? I think I can see a few in that pic but maybe that's just me. Are you going to be treating again?

Yeah..........I have them, again or still.......???....whatever.

The pic is the frag I put up for auction and the bugs always liked that coral so I blew it up and Bingo, there they were. I am baffled.

I was reading in the SPS forum where this guy thinks there are two different types. I might agree cuz these are extremely small and I could only see them with a flashlight and magnifying glass at night.

I'm undecided on treatment and will prolly take the live with them course for now. I will treat anything coming to auction.

Sorry to make you have to look harder :(. Ignorance really is bliss huh? I'd be happy to hold your mandarin for ya if you do treat- I don't think he'd fair to well with another treatment. I've read the same about the 'bad' and 'not-so-bad' types of RB's. I think ours are probably the same as you and Chris- if you really know what to look for and really squint at a coral you know has them you might be able to barely see them but for the most part you need a macro lens on a camera or mesoscope or magnifying glass to see them. Ours don't really seem to be stressing the corals much at all yet so until they do we will just live with them the best we can.

Sorry you have them again..still....whatever the case may be- it sucks either way.

Scott,Erin, Kirsten,
That really sucks. Kirsten I'm not sure I can see any bugs in your pic. Can you point them out? I guess I'm pulling out the macro again just to be sure. Maybe ignorance is bliss but I want to know.

Dave,
Can I get an interceptor pill from you? I don't need a whole pack just a pill. I'm going to double up my treatment to both interceptor and TMPCC.

Well, not 100% sure all these are red bugs but very possible- kind of hard to tell on this colored coral- they show up a lot better on darker or lighter corals. They seem to prefer only certain types of coral as well so just because they may not be on one doesn't mean they won't be on another.

is anyone going to sell interceptor at the auction so everyone can have access to a treatment?
might be a good idea, as many of us don't have vet friends.
just a thought...
