yep, and it is our mission to educate ... hopefully the mystery of QT and the fear and difficulty will be reduced over time!

The way I answered this poll was to select "I tread for AEFW." I chose this answer because I dip corals in SeaChem Reef Coral dip (similar to TMPCC), then place in tank.

I actually have interceptor as well, but I got out of the habit of using it. Why, I have no idea. Because I just found out that I have red bugs.

I do not QT corals because I am relatively new in the hobby and have spent WAY too much money already and the idea of buying yet another halide setup for a QT tank was not something that I prioritized. I have a QT tank, I just do not use it for corals. I akso find that the idea of trying to keep the water parameters in a small 10 gallon tank stable enough for SPS to live in for several weeks, pretty darned intimidating...

Nothing simple about reefing. Either you QT, Treat, or you DON'T.
If you can reef, you can reef correctly.

I have been reading this post over and over agian and I must of missed where I have mentioned that reefing is simple :confused:

I think that was a general statement. Reefing really can be simple if you don't do it correctly - QT is one of those short cuts obviously lots of people have decided to cut. Reefing isn't simple if you care about your livestock and others. Reefing is simple if you cut corners.

NOBODY said that you said reefing is simple. I was making the statement to those that may be coasting a bit too much, to try to get them to realize the necessary work to maintain a healthy reef.

reefer russian roulette without QT, But like was stated earlier some dont have the means or perhaps more accurately and commonly, the patience.

3. A condition of enforced isolation.
4. A period of 40 days.
tr.v. quar·an·tined, quar·an·tin·ing, quar·an·tines
1. To isolate in or as if in quarantine.
2. To isolate politically or economically

DO I know what QT is ? Yes.
Do I understand how much work is it to maintain? Yes, I used to have a QT tank.
The one thing I haven't seen mentioned about not keeping a QT tank is time constraints.
My QT tank went down when I got promoted at work. Why? Now I work on average 70-75 hours a week and it's on graveyard shift. I have a difficult time keeping up with the one main tank I have.
Do I need to QT. I believe definately yes , but I simply cannot . I do not have the physical time. If you read my interests I also have others around that require my time , like my kids, and at 16 and 13 it's a handful...LOL.
I know I take a huge chance by not putting everything into QT but it's a chance I cannot change.

I am back and here are the results of the poll. I like to thank all 46 who has Participated out of 709 hits of this thread.

I wonder how many have red bugs now....?:hmm1:

I agree Mike. I really didn't know any better when I first started. Now, anyone that uses this site or is a member of TBRC should know. Still not clear on softies/LPS - but they are QT (watched) just not treated.

I'm very surprised at the people that do know better and still pass these invested corals around - that is just a lack of responsibility/caring for the hobby.

I think more would qt if they could.. you still need a somewhat expensive set up to qt sps with

$100 used 50 gallon Oceanic tank and stand
$100 Aquaconnect 250 watt 14K bulb
$125 Ice Cap 250 watt MH ballast
$ 25 DIY reflector with mogul socket
$ 40 used Coralife 125 skimmer
$ 10 used Maxi Jet 1200 powerhead
$ 31 bucket of Reef Crystals salt
$ 28 Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure
$ 15 Salifert Flat Wrom Exit
$ 20 Interceptor
$ 20 carbon

$514 so far. Did I miss anything?

I guess what we are saying is - for the health of your corals and when you share/sell your corals - quarantine. Why fork out $ only to fork out more to treat your whole tank, find homes for your livestock that will die because of the treatment etc, etc, etc.

Mike - That is up town prices - I have my setup at about a third of yours at most :D.

That's the setup for a tank load of SPS.
The QT setup for fish doesn't use the MH lighting which cuts the cost in half.

We use 10 gallon QT tank w/ MH purchased from Aquatraders.com. Their light fixtures come complete w/ bulbs for a really good price. I wouldn't use their lights on our main tank but for a QT tank you can't beat the price. Our corals in QT have always seem to do well with them.
I will say that a lot of people probably don't QT when trading w/ fellow hobbiest because they judge a person tank condition based on how nice there tanks look. I have asked a couple of people if they QT and the answer was no because the tank there frags came from looked very healthy!!!
I hate to say it but live and learn. It's a lot of money to learn the heard way.

I'm using the same bulb/ballast/reflector on the QT for SPS that I have on the 390, so I can see how the corals respond to the lighting that they will have to live with.

When i get my 72 up and running i will be qting evrything new that goes in. How much light do you need to qt sps in like a 20g tank? I have a 65w powercompact fixture, is that enough? Or should i like into upgrading that?
