Someone is selling these red dragon frags in my area. The first pic is 150 but it looks like it rtn'd and stopped. the guy says it's been stable but not sure what it will do if it gets stressed again. The second and third pic is for 250 and it is well encrusted. Whaddya think? If i asked most of my friends, they'd say i'm nuts, so I am asking all of you guys since you guys are the only ones that would understand.

eh id say you're nuts, but if you're happy then you're happy. looks like a purple turaki to me, but then again i suck at giving IDs.

I would also say nuts. Im going to wait however many years it takes till the price drops to below Benjamin status. At least.

But hey, more hobbyists, like you, buying these frags and propogating will contribute to that process. So maybe yes?

Maybe ask/wait for a smaller 150 frag encrusted or even ask for a 150 buck fresh cut? JMO

Nice frag but I still would say that you are nuts.

nice, can you post a picture from the collonie?!
I can go back and take photos but I think this thread is better.

Yeah, I am nuts for colored sticks. Ppl pay more for an eye of a chalice coral. Why not a red, baby blue tip deepwater with white polyps? How sexy is that! I am partial to acros and see more value in this than the most expensive chalice corals.

Your opinions are appreciated. I don't have the patience like you have. Wish I did. LOL

I'm into the "LE" corals too, but the red dragon doesn't catch my attention at all.
This one catches my eye for sure and will definitely be a stand out piece in my tank among my other deepwater type acros. I heard some say it doesn't. Everyone has their own preferences.
I'd think you can find bigger frag for that price... More branchy I'd say. Not a singular 1" branch
I was thinking about goin' bargain hunting but if I cant find a better deal. i'm fine dropping the dough for this one. Wanted it for a very long time.

go for it bro. if you really want it, pull the trigger. i've seen it in person and it is a nice coral, but definitely not worth the price. not trying to move you into a new direction, just giving you some insight. great looking piece though :)

Not worth the price IMO. Red Dragon is very cool but WAY overpriced. 150-250 dollars for a small 1-2 inch frags, I will pass. I would pay $50 for the STNed one and maybe $80 for the second one, tops.

Looks nice but I can get 3 or 4 very nice frags from local reefers for the price of the one that STN'd. I'm not gonna say you're nuts because if it's something that looks good to you and you're not paying with the rent money then there's no reason you shouldn't buy it but I'd have to pass at that price.

Definately not worth the price in my mind. Its nice but its not 3-5x as nice as any other coral so why should I pay 3-5x the price?

Eric Borneman and Anthony Calfo said it better than I can. Yes you are nuts. :)

As an example of this phenomenon, about a year ago, I was honored to speak to the Los Angeles aquarium society, and was shown a member's tank. As I stared at the tank, the owner asked if I "saw anything special." I scrutinized the tank, feeling as though I were missing something. I looked left, and I looked right, and I looked in every nook and cranny in an instant, feeling like I was obviously obtuse in my observations of this tank. I was finally pointed toward a small fragment of an Acropora that was then explained to be one of the original and few remaining fragments of the famous "Steve Tyree Purple Monster." Without meaning offense, I must admit it wasn't terribly purple. In fact, I have some corals stuck in the back of my tank or lying on the sand with more color than this infamous specimen. I see corals with more color in most fish stores on a regular basis, yet this coral apparently commands a price of several hundred dollars for a centimeter or less. My impression is that a lot of people in this hobby have simply lost their minds!

Don't be one of them. :)
