Red Fuzzy Lion

Doesn't like being photographed in it's coffee cup cave. Turns away every time I try to get a picture.

The fish was a solid dark red at the store, as soon as I got it home it looked like a regular brown/white fuzzy and I was a little disappointed. Shed it's cuticle immediately after acclimation.

After calming down the darker color has mostly returned.

Let the weaning begin.

Looks good, that's an interesting choice of shelter. xD And I say it's a male, but I could be wrong.

How big? Standard sized coffee cup... so the fish is maybe 3, 3.5 inches?

The coffee cup is a good shelter for QT tanks, the fish seem to feel comfortable in the darkness and it's really easy to clean.

I'd guess male too, but I don't really know.

No, but I did get a nice pair of ocellaris clowns from them. Tropical Fish Haven's saltwater selection isn't what it once was, mainly freshwater now.

Not showing any interest yet, but I'd wager it's just a wee bit more concerned with the monster that just turned it's whole world upside down.

I bet he looks better in person, doesn't he. It's like mine, I cannot capture the color with the camera.

It doesn't look very red, right? But this thing is glowing fluorescent red. Same with you?

You're right about that, the pictures don't represent the colors of the fish very well. The last picture is close, that's the only one with the flash off but the image is still a little washed out because of the tank lighting.

It's still a little stressed out so at any given time it's a neutral brown to a deep maroon. When I got it home I thought they bagged the wrong fish, light brown stripes on a white fish.

The pectoral fins are very vivid. The fish itself is very dark at times. When it sleeps it's that maroon color and you can't see the stripes. Right now it's brown with red bands.

Most of the scorps I've seen down here are pretty generic, that's what drew me to this fish.

First thing I did was look for rapid breathing, but the respiration rate is really slow...I assume that's good?

BEAUTIFUL!!! I'm looking for a red male myself. Surprisingly it's tough to find a male around here, and much harder to find a red male. I'll probably have to end up getting one off DD, but I hate paying those high prices :-(

Pretty fish for sure!

I'm glad it seems to be healthy, and kudos for giving the fish a good looking over before getting it.

Renee and I saw a really responsive P. russelii and a gorgeous black morph P. volitans over the weekend, but something didn't seem "right". We happened to pop back by the same LFS yesterday (we went back for some peps and snails), and sure enuff...spots on the fish.

I had the guys at the LFS move an Arothron puffer out of the tank on Saturday because we could see that both lions were getting chewed on by the puffer, so that stress may have been a factor.

Keep the updates coming on your new red.

This little guy was in the wrong tank too. They just had a shipment so it was with four triggers and two puffers. One of the triggers was a foot long Indian Trigger.

The fuzzy had been there about a week, I asked if it was eating and they said it ate three ghost shrimp the day I bought it. Raised my eyebrow and said "Sure it did."

So I'm operating under the assumption that it has been outcompeted for a week an is probably pretty hungry.

A lot more active today, the little guy is all over the tank showing off after spending all yesterday trying to hide.

Showed a little bit of interest in the feeding stick but not much. Maybe tomorrow.

I got some ghost shrimp today, it hunted and pounced on the live one. Decided to try the ole fishing line trick with a dead ghost shrimp but it slipped off the line almost immediately and drifted to the top of a small rock. The fuzzy took notice and after a bit of deliberation...success!

I even got it on video. $20 if you can guess what kind of camera I used...this is going to be tough.
