I am new to a panted aquarium. I am in the process of setting-up a seahorse tank (erectus) and need to get some macros that have some height. I have seen a couple of sites that advertise "red kelp on rock " (Fosters&Smith & Seawater Express") and "red grape"--what are these? I am worried about using caulerpa due to the sexual/care nneeded for pruning. are these types of caulerpa?

The macro commonly refered to as red grape caulerpa is not a caulerpa at all. Can't remember the actual name right now. I don't think the red kelp is a caulerpa either. I have had the red grape in my seahorse tank for almost a year with no problems. The ponies love to hitch to it. Pretty too.

I havent seen a caulerpa that wasnt green yet. Red grape on rock = Botryocladia.

Botryocladia, yes, that is the one I have. Recently it had grown so large that it needed pruning. I just snipped it to the length I wanted then took a small piece of rock and rubberbanded it to it. It hasn't been very long so I can't say yet whether it has attached itself. I would like to know the correct way to attach it too.
i just dabbed a little bit of superglue down into a hole in the rock and then stuck the red grape "stalk" down in the hole. Has worked a million times. I have several different species of the Botryocladia and have done this with all of them. I have a 125 with 11 seahorses and i feed directly over one of my larger pieces and it is a sight to see all 11 hitched on to it eating.
the two macros you mentioned are also sold at www.marineflora.com and they are already attached to a rock. they're about $25/piece. I got some, beautiful they are!
