Red Mangroves In DT?

I have a 20 Gal Tall Reef, with 12k MH. I want to put some Red Mangroves in it. Has anyone done this? Or do you not recommend this? Input and pictures will be appreciated. Thanks

Also tips for what to look for when buying, with leaves, roots? I dont know anything about them.. and tips for growing Red Mangroves

They require a very fine substrate, but other than that, they'll be fine for a while, at least. I wouldn't do it, because they will be inconvenient after a while, but they could make for an interesting tank.

I have fine substrate, What other tips do you have?

You'll need a separate lighting fixture for the mangroves unless the room is fairly well lit. Other than that, they are fairly easy to grow. Just remember to spray the leave well with some fresh water from time to time. :)

The tanks MH wont do? Thanks for the reply :D

The mangroves will get too large to fit under the same fixture as the tank in a very short time, and the MH might be too intense, as well.

Hmm, When they get big Ill put them in another separate tank, Ive always wanted a planted one. Im getting them as seeds to start

I have been using a $6 5000k florescent floodlight over mine. I have had 9 mangroves in my fuge like this for about 10 months now. Keep the tips of the seedlings out of the water and they should sprout for you.
8 of the nine sprouted within a month or two, but the ninth just sprouted a couple weeks ago.

Sounds like an interesting project keepv us posted

Will do!

What do you mean keep out of the water? Like Ive said Ive never had any sorry for being a noob. Do i do the Styrofoam thing. so it floats?

I had a bunch in my tank a while back with no issues. They actually looked nice. The only downside was that every snail in my tank was hooked on them.

They did not grow much for me as the tang had his on tap lunch.

Did you buy yours as seeds or with roots and leaves?

Do you happen to have pictures?

I'm not sure about the styrofoam thing, seems to me that they would be floating around the tank like that. I guess that's OK.

I had mine in the fuge, where the water level was low enough for the the black tips to be out of the water. I used a frag rack to keep them vertical until the roots came in.

THe Styrofoam thing is when you put it in Styrofoam so the bottom is in the water, but the top does not touch the water and it needs to be that way to grow.

I have few from a while ago. These were the red macro algae ones. The other mangroves I was given i never took a pic.

Hope this helps
