red mangroves

I have one question on them. I was reading thru the RK mag and read about them. My one question is will the roots grow and crack the glass in my sump.

Well thats it. Thanks

Not that I have any first hand experience. But I highly, highly, HIGHLY doubt that that's going to happen. People wouldn't keep them if they did. :)

I've tried them, and truthfully, they don't grow fast enough to do much of anything, certainly not able to break the glass.
I ended up throwing them into a bucket out in the yard -in freshwater- and intend to plant them in a pond in the spring. If you are looking for nitrate removal, find something that grows FAST and FURIOUS. Mangrove's nutrient take up is slight, because they grow slowly.
It's just another thing that one person did, and made grandious claims about it's effectiveness and spawned a bunch of people wanting to copy over exagrarated results.
Just one other view...

I might also add they are claimed to draw a lot of Magnesium out of solution, so that's something else you have to test and dose if you keep them.
(I find this claim suspect as well!)

I love my mangroves, I grow 10 pods next to my chaeto in the refugium. If they are going to break your sump I cannot imagine it occuring within the first 10 years of growing them.

I think the mg uptake thing is also bunk, my mg is always high despite the fact I never dose it and my mangroves are constantly growing at a steady rate.

I wouldn't replace chaeto with mangroves, but they a very fun option to run along side some of the faster growing macro algaes.

I plan on filling my sump with lots of different macro algaes I just wanted to make sure before I ended up with 30 gallons of water all over my bedroom floor, and a $100 pump completly burnt out

Agreed, mangroves aren't going to have any detectable difference on water quality. They grow much too slowly. They might, however, be good for providing more habitat in your sump for amphipods, sponges, etc. among the roots.
