I've tried them, and truthfully, they don't grow fast enough to do much of anything, certainly not able to break the glass.
I ended up throwing them into a bucket out in the yard -in freshwater- and intend to plant them in a pond in the spring. If you are looking for nitrate removal, find something that grows FAST and FURIOUS. Mangrove's nutrient take up is slight, because they grow slowly.
It's just another thing that one person did, and made grandious claims about it's effectiveness and spawned a bunch of people wanting to copy over exagrarated results.
