Red Planet help

Looks like it is progressing nicely to me - you are getting great encrusting, at some point it will start to grow out tips, but you have to be patient - frags will sometimes do little for months, maybe even a year, and then suddenly they'll start growing. I wouldn't change a thing.

+1 looks healthy to me for sure.
 
It is one of the highest placed corals in my tank, and I am using this frag as a guesstimation of the PAR my 4x24w is putting down over the tank, are the blotches of pink a good indication of sufficient light?

Or too soon to tell...?
 
The green on RP tends to be more prevalent at lower PAR, whereas universal pink/red is more common in higher PAR. Regardless, I would say it is getting sufficient light - it is encrusting and has fantastic colour, so you are doing something right ;)
 
The green/red-pink coloration is what was tempting me to lower the light, I have it at 8" now, so Im just waiting on the upwards/outwards growth.... then hopefully ill see what the color is really like...

Agree....just takes time. Plus it just looks like a small nub which take even longer to start growing (usually).
 
I think it looks great, as long as it is still encrusting, that is growth, as long as there is growth, you're going in the right direction, there are some corals that take quite awhile to grow, they can't all be birdsnests ;)
 
I have found that it is a pretty slow grower. This piece has taken about three years to get to its current size, which is about 12" long by about 4"-6" wide, depending on the spot. I should add that I believe mine to be a "Red Planet" variant, and not the true ORA Red Planet. Still a A. Hyacinthus though :thumbsup:.

I'm colorblind but I was going to suggest giving it more light. That said, with a nub that small, it will take time. It looks very healthy and beautiful I might add!
 
Just as a reference I thought I would share just how high its located in the tank in correlation with other SPS, so I'm thinking the amount of light shouldn't be the issue...

I have a small frag of red planet that i've nicknamed encrusting red planet..lol it has great color but just does nothing but encrust and i've had it for like....6-8 months.
 
Seems like there is always some variation with red planet. Mine hasn't encrusted in 2 months but is getting white growth at the tips. I have mine low in the tank, but it must be getting decent par. It has almost no green. Mostly the pink, red color they get with high light.
 
Last week I added more flow on that back part of the reef so hopefully it yields additional growth soon! The polyps already "appear" to have slightly more extension than before...
