Red Planet is taking over!

So my red planet is encrusting like crazy and is trying to take over my aussie gold acro that is nearby, starting to cause rtn at the base. It's even trying to grow over the top of my mini maxi nem!
Is there a way to halt the encrusting of the RP without hurting the rest of it?

look at my new thread on aefw, that is a big red planet. They will encrust a lot but even when coral bases touch it does not seem to matter that much. I have a milli and another acro each encrusted, touching the base of the red planet. I am not sure why your acros is stn'ing<a href="http://s382.photobucket.com/user/eralff/media/photo17-1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/eralff/photo17-1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo17-1.jpg"/></a>

FTS please!

Ya, i'll post a pic later.
And toothman, thanks for possibly picking up on my mistake earlier… i meant to say stn, not rtn. But yes, the base of the aussie gold is turning white where the rp is making contact. That RP is gorgeous, btw!

I can try the epoxy thing, too. Didn't think about lifting it off later.

Yes it will grow over the two part epoxy. You can chip away at it with a screwdriver. There isnt really permanent solution since it tends to keep on growing back unless it hits something more aggressive then itself..

holy cow toothman. that RP is going to give me nightmares.

I use putty all the time to stop encrusting. it is an every couple of months deal, but you can fight for the same square inch for months. the coral takes a month to encrust an area, then you cover it with epoxy, then it takes a month or two to cover epoxy, then take the epoxy off, it takes another month to regain that spot again. that right there is 4-6months for the same inch of territory

If you get good at sps'ing, you will constantly have to battle stuff like this. At first, it will break your heart to go into your tank with a chisel, but after a while, you get used to it.

Some acros will get to where they touch, turn white and then do nothing. Sometimes, one will encroach on the other one - this is where you have to intervene.

If you look on the sps thread section you will see I am now trying to eradicate aefw in this tank. It still looks just like the picture, did l lose other weaker colonies. Do not thing aefw on red planet, but I intend on isolating all corals and dipping them. Should be crazy, hope they live. Believe me the tank really does look like that picture, it is just a unphotoshoped I phone picture. I THING RED PLANET IS ONE OF THE NICEST CORALS YOU CAN BUY AND GROWS LIKE A WEED. Not a great choice for a small tank however.

Here's a shot from the front of the tank and one from the left.
Both coral are on top of a rock tower and were on opposite sides.

I use Aiptasia X (which I believe is nothing more then kalk) and apply it with the included syringe to encroaching corals. It "burns" where you apply it but doesn't cause further damage.

Yup, i have heard of this too... I have a bucket of kalkwasser powder... just don't know what ratio of water to powder to use. Was also afraid of making a mess in the tank. I assume you have the same issue though of the same coral eventually growing on top of the paste? Would this build up over time?
