Reefmack, I just ordered a HM Digital TDS-3 meter 18.95 free shipping. I do have an RO here at the house it is a portable 25gpd system as I said earlier I am lucky if I get 5gpd out of it. I haven't used it all that much because it takes so long was usually easier just to run to the lfs to get ro and saltwater when they had it. Since I have had the RO though for about 8 months thought I would order new filters I last had my RO water tested about 3 months ago and TDS was 0 then. Also I hadn't thought about it until reading what you wrote earlier I started last week giving flake food a couple of times a week. I had been feeding Rod's Food only but am starting to run low so was trying to make it last longer since I now will have to order it online and pay way to much for overnight shipping.

brycek - the HM TDS-3 is the same TDS meter I have, and the price sounds about the same as I paid. My RO/DI is a 5 stage and portable also. I run it in the back yard off of my garden hose outlet. I think it's rated 60 gpd and it doesn't take all that long to make up the 5-10 gallons I make every weekend. After a few months it's still giving 0 TDS - tap was 64 when I tested it yesterday, We have very soft water here - about 20 ppm hardness, so the filters & membrane should last me a while.

hey guys it benn a long time scince i have last checked in i have so much to catch up on but here is a post of my tank stuff http://www.reeflounge.com/showthread.php?t=27049
o yea i have a question my pumps like he stock power heads that the tank comes with melted together and dont work any more is their anyway they can give me money to go buy some maxijets or somthing elso besides the oes it came with

doihavethemoney - that's a bummer on the pumps melting. I had to read the last page of your thread to see that the tanks ran too low while you were gone and they ran dry for some period of time. That would definitely generate enough heat to melt them! An MJ1200 will fit in one spot, but I don't think there's room to get 2 side by side. You may have to work on the outlet too to be able to fit a powerhead on. Sorry about the tank disaster. The easiest fix would be to get 2 new RSM pumps, if you're going to keep the tank running. I doubt REd Sea would replace them due to what happened though. I suppose you could try. I'm 99.9999% sure they won't give you money to buy other brand pumps.

I was wondering what would be the best light bulbs to run in my RSM? Right now I am running hamilton's 50/50 and the colors are not that good. Thanx

i can only hope that they will replace them they were coveref by like 75% of water. also all the live stock is still ok so it wasnt too much of a disaster only casualty was the red sea max pumps im going to call red sea max tommorow should i call pinky or does it matter

do you think that 2 mj 900 could fit without any modding

VCReefer26 - I'm not sure I understand your question. The RSM bulbs are a non-standard size of T5. Some have been successful in replacing them with another brand that's close in size, but it was a tight fit I think. No experience with the Hamilton 50/50 bulbs - are you running those in an RSM? The RSM bulbs are really under rated by most non-owners, and they are capable of supporting most corals, with SPS types kept on the top.

doihavethemoney - good luck with Red Sea. Let us know how you do. It probably doesn't matter who you talk to, but I suppose you could ask for Pinky.

Tank Update

Tank Update

New FTS from yesterday. I moved a large piece of rock with a nice green zoa colony to the right side (not visible). I got the rock with some rubble from an lfs, and hated to hide the zoas out of site, or dry the unneeded rock. I then moved some remaining things around on the front substrate to get better flow and get rid of some cyano that had developed. Things were just too cramped, plus I have a tendency to overfeed. Having my timers get messed up after a recent all night power outage resulted in my MH lamp being on for 12+ hours instead of 7-8 - I noticed that mid week & got my timimg reset. Put all of these things together and they promote cyano. I also added some new aragonite base to increase the substrate depth in the front. Top left is a small magnetic frag rack I put in temporarily to hold a small nepthea frag.

My new frag of neon green Palau Nepthea - hard to photograph fluorescent green corals - too bright I guess. Liveaquaria wants $80 & shipping for this size frag. I got mine for only $19.

Some new Montipora digitata. The small orange piece on the right broke off while mounting the piece on the left, so I mounted the small piece on the right side of a new purple digitata in the middle. In just a bit over a week there are new branch shoots popping up on both the orange and purple, Lower left is a German blue digitata only a few weeks old & doing great. Bottom middle is a superman monti that has doubled in size in 3 weeks - much prettier than the pictures show.

In the 5 frag pack with the above new digitata I got a piece of nice green Monti cap - mounted it below my orange piece that is starting to form plates after a few weeks.

Green & Orange digis about a month old and really growing!

The other two Montis in the frag pack were two encrusting types - I think the first is a M. danae type, with hard to see small, bright blue polyps, and no idea what the one in the second pic is. Pics are a bit fuzzy but I was in a rush to eat dinner

I guess that's it for an update on what's happening in my tank.

I had a problem with Cyano also, my parameters were all good, I ended up using BlueVet Red Slime Control and that took care of my cyano problem. I just wished I would have used that product prior to me trying all the other methods of ridding it. Look into that product.

Hi shramj - good to "see" you again. The cyano wasn't that bad - I'm not even 100% sure it was cyano, and may have been diatom from too many hours of light for a while - it was a brown color and not red. My parameters are all good, and only 0 - 0.5 nitrate. My RO/DI is still putting out 0 TDS so if it was phosphate or silicate it would have to be coming in with the salt mix. I did think about the Red Slime remover, but would rather try other things before resorting to chemicals.

I've had my tank running for about a year and a half now so acouple months ago i changed the stock RSM bulbs with hamilton 50/50 bulbs which fit. I tried putting a actinic and a 10k and those did not fit. So What i would like to do is find another set of bulbs that will give me some better coloring for my corals. Thanx

Ok VCReefer26 - now I understand. I'm not running the RSM hood anymore, but maybe someone that's replaced their bulbs with something better for the coral color can jump in with recommendations.

i think you are better off with the stock lighting. even though its got PC connectors, the bulbs are T-5 and produce more intense light than you can get from any replacement.

i tried a coralife bulb and did not think it looked as good or as bright as the stock so i already "Retreated" and went back to stock.

plus some folks mentioned running anything other than stock might be bad for your ballast becasue of the "special" bulbs that come with the RSM (T-5 bulbs with PC connectors). I am not an electrical engineer and maybe i am just paranoid but it wasnt worth the risk of having to repalce a hood becasue i wanted to experiment with non stock bulbs

just my 2 cents

Reefmack,

Your tank is looking great. I set my two monti's (green/orange) like you have yours. After a bit of warfare over which direction they each were each going to grow, they have really started to grow.

With a very short summer and an even shorter salmon fishing season the aquarium is getting little attention lately but seems to get along just fine with minimal upkeep. I really think I've done more harm fiddling around in the tank daily for the first eight months than leaving it alone. I used to break out in a sweat if the temp changed more than a one degree not to too long ago. lol

doihavethemoney - now that I'm home I can see your pics - they have them blocked at work now. Nice pics & the corals & tank are coming along nicely.

Hodge - good to have you stop in. I'll bet you get some pretty nice salmon in your area! You're making me hungry LOL. I've caught some introduced ones in the great lakes when I lived up north, and they're at the top of my preferred menu fish!

help with the Clean up Crew

help with the Clean up Crew

Hi all.
I need to include some inverts to help me keep the substrate clean.
Some have said that the turbo snails are a good addition, but also, have a very low survival rate.

What inverts can you recommend to help me with the detritus and algae?

Thank you
Arreola

Tonight my anemone split. I had noticed over the past couple of days it moved locations on its rock and just a little while ago I was looking at my RSM and something didn't seem right so I turned on the lights and there it was one on the left side of the rock and a smaller one on the right side. Just checked fedex and my refugium will be here in the morning. I can't wait to get it up and going.

Arreola, I haven't had any problem with my turbo snails actually they are reproducing. As for keeping the substrate clean I will tell you I have one sand sifting star fish and a diamond goby and a couple of crabs and they do a pretty good job keeping everything clean.

brycek - Thanks on the cleaner crew info.
Ain't the dimond goby and the Sand Sifting Sea Star too large for the RSM?
My LFS recieves marine fish shipments every yuesday so I will try to get a goby tomorrow.

Arreola

Arreola, my goby is about 2 inches in length and my star fish is only about 4 inhces from tip to tip and seems to do just fine. I had one diamond goby for almost a year before he disappeared. I have been unable to locate him in my RSM so i bought another one a couple of weeks ago and he is doing fine.
