Reefmack;
My only point-probably not a good idea to place a flame angel in a newly establised RSM-Just my opinion Sir.
Thanks-Jerry

JB23 - Are you sure it's not the advice of your lfs? They've given you some IMO pretty unconventional advice in the past. My Flame went in my smaller tank within a week or two of setting it up with cured live rock and confirming no measurable cycle. I think Iostream and I were questioning your comment that fully matured live rock "is their principal source of food", which is erroneous. They don't eat live rock, and fully matured live rock is typically algae free, and wouldn't provide any algae as food. I'm not meaning to argue - I just didn't understand what your comment was based on?

Good Morning, I have been doing a little reading on line here and was wondering has anyone had any luck with clams in their RSM?

Meanwhile, back to the fins & gills stuff rather than feathered lizards.... green chickens.... or whatever!
I finally made the trip to a local LFS called 'Exotic Aquatic'. Very impressive place! For Nano tank algae control, Eddie strongly recommended "ALLGONE". Six pouches to add to the rear chamber every couple weeks to control green hair and cyano algae. When I mentioned my Royal Gramma's Ick, he asked if I had treated for flukes! What????? He explained that flukes were a common cause of weakening fish and allowing Ick to develop. Hmmm??? Made sense to me! I purchased "PrazilPro" .... a totally reef safe treatment.

Any thoughts???

Kent, I haven't been on the forums lately, been traveling for work alot. I used a product called Blue Vet RX Red Slime Control and that took care of my cyano or red slime algae that was growing all over my sand and rock. My water perms were good to go, no nitrate, phosphates good, etc. I finally ended up going with the Red Slime Control and all was good in a couple of days. I do have a little green hair/grass algae and some bubble algae. I was thinking of giving the product you used a try, how do you like the ALGONE product since you have had it for a while now?

shramj, just to add my 2 cents worth. I just put algone in my max two days ago haven't noticed anything yet however I have been using it in my freshwater since I had a huge green water break out a few months ago my water has stayed crystal clear in there ever since.

shramj - Weiss Organics "Algae Magic" works well for controlling green hair algae

brycek - Some people are keeping clams under stock lighting in the top third of their tanks. A Derasa or Squamosa would do well. A Maxima will survive but not thrive. I wouldn't consider a Crocea.

Reefmack and JB23 - The ideal environment for a Flame Angel is a mature and stable tank min 30 gals with live rock to graze on. Since they will eat prepared foods this isn't mandatory though. They can be introduced to a stable tank as long as they are fed a good omnivore diet and are fed a couple times a day. Personally, I'd be comfortable adding a Flame Angel after about 2 months but wouldn't put it in a RSM because the tank is a little too small.

Brent Where'd your avatar go?

The avatar is my “off the air” because I knew I wouldn’t be around for a while.

I just got back from a trip to Burgess Shale which is a 505 million year old fossil bed and is one of the key discoveries in refining our understanding of how evolution occurred.

I work with a geologist who has a PHD in Palaeontology and led some digs for the Royal Tyrell Museum which is also near Calgary. He is a certified guide that is authorized to take people to the site (it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and access is restricted) and was fascinating to spend a couple days with learning more about this important fossil bed. We also went up Mt. Stephen to see a large trilobite bed.

One thing I found very interesting is many of these half billion year old life forms are very similar to what we find in our live rock.

I just order some ALGONE, I will give it a try. I will post a review in a couple of weeks after I have used it.

What brand of salt mix do you guys use? I had mostly been getting my water from my LFS which used Tropic Marin but since they are going out of business I had to start making my own again. I have a bag of Reef Crystals, which since I have started using I noticed that my ph, alkalinity and calcium levels have all been lower.

I use Reefer's Best but plan on switching back to OceanPure Pro because of Oceanpure's higher calcium levels

Brent Agreed on the flame angel & mature rock when stated as you did. But, if the flames need algae they wouldn't find any at all on my mature rock - there just isn't any anymore. But, as you said they will do just fine on a good prepared omnivore food, and some dried algae is also good if there's none on the rock to pick off.

I've always wanted to visit Burgess Shale, but never have. I think I've been fossil hunting since I was a young kid, and used to have some good sites around me in the various places I've lived (and fished LOL). The only "hunting" I do these days is on Ebay, and I've managed to get nice deals on things I never could find on my own.

Well I bit the bullet on the 1/4 Current Chiller. Does anyone have any photos of their chiller install on the RSM? I would guess I get a submersible pump to push the water to the chiller and back around to the same compartment (next to the heater).

GPH Specs for the chiller are 540/960.

Any tips on what pump to use? Something quiet?

Well I have the chiller and it is waaaaaay too big. I have no place to put it. So I guess I will sell it and buy a 1/10. I really like the Coralife 1/10 I think I will go in that direction. I will post a F/S or Trade add soon.

I believe Kent, NaCl+H2O Fish, offered you a trade if your chiller was to big

Yes he sure did. But I am researching small footprint chillers and plus I do not know much on the PCI chillers. If I am correct the Coralife 1/10 is a smaller footprint. I am trying to fit a specific spot.

RSM D Model

RSM D Model

Hello,
This is my first time on Reef Central. Im interested in the RSM. After extensive research (most of it in this forum), Im ready to buy. I understand that there is a 'd' model that fixes some of the issues with the original version. My questions are:
Does anyone know exactly what the differences are in the original and the d?
Is the d model out yet? If so, where can I find it?
If it is not out, should I wait on it?

Thanks in advance for all your help. I have enjoyed the RSM owners club. It will be a BIG help once I get everything up and running.

I will finally be getting all of my equipment to set up my sump/refugium this week. A question just now came to mind.......Will I need to cycle my sump/refugium? and keep it separate from my RSM until it has cycled?

Depends on what you have in it. If you have uncured live rock in the refugium you need to cure it.

If the sump is empty or just has sand and cured rock you can turn it on right away. Just make sure the water parameters and temperature are teh same to keep from shocking your RSM inhabitants
