Reefmack: & RhinoCY84: It was Rue's anemone that got pulled through the grate ... twice that I know of!! It split after one of the episodes!
The Anemone came out from its perch. I shut off the flow, and that made it move..I guess it wanted flow, lol. Looks to be ok, but that had to be stressful...poor thing.

donna53w,

I had a intermittent temp problem a couple months ago and eventually traced it to the stock heater malfunctioning. It took several days before I caught it on when it wasn't supposed to be.

That reminds me, I never got my warranty parts from Pinky.

OMG ... My skimmer is 'hooped'!!! :mad2: I took it out to inspect the impeller, just touched the thing & the tube connector broke!! I am not a happy camper. I guess the upside is that I placed an order right away from my supplier for a Tunze Nano DOC Skimmer 9002, and hopefully it will arrive next week some time. $167.59 with tax and no charge for shipping. Tank temp is down to 81.2 from 82.8 after shutting skimmer off about an hour ago.

RhinoCY84 - good to hear that yet another anemone has survived the deadly gate!

Donna - I'm guessing that must be the reason the pump was heating up. Maybe it wasn't getting enough cool room temp. air being pulled in. Good luck with the Tunze! By the way - looks like a couple of tube worm casings on the side.

air pumps and hot temps

air pumps and hot temps

well donna you are not the first person to have to deal with this. i had my pump on my nano near the tank and it would help keep it steady and then i moved it over towards the TV and wham 4 degrees i was like. hmmm i wonder what up??!?!?!?! moved it again to cool spot infront of fan and it cooler it another 4 degrees. was a trip but fun :')

donna53w:

Sorry to hear about your skimmer pump. At least you were able to find the culprit to your heat issues.

And welcome to the Tunze 9002 club  I think you will be impressed with its performance when compared to your stock unit.

Jameshongth - I believe the Vortech would be too strong. I have the Tunze Nano and it is just a little too strong and I know the Vortech is more powerful. The Tunze beats the Hydro hands down for function and quality.

The flow rate for VorTech MP20 is 500-2000 gallons per hour so it's ideally suited for aquariums smaller than 70 gallons.

jameshongth - I can't recall any RSM owner using a Vortech. I think the idea of having the motor outside the tank, and transferring the power magnetically though thre glass is a real plus. Too costly for me - still $400+ over here. The Vortech is supposedly adjustable from 100-3,000 gph, so the flow could be controlled quite nicely in the RSM. But it's a one-direction flow - that part I don't like - for $400 a person should be able to adjust the direction of the flow, rather than by having to move the powerhead location. [/B]

Hi reefmack,

Although the VorTech unable to direction as Tunze nano or Hydor , but It has it strong point as It do not produce much heat in the tank, small in size and it also able to create different mode of wave .:D

jameshongth - I had forgotten that Vortech now had 2 models released. The MP40 at a minimum 1,000 gph would be way too much, but the MP20 at 500 is good. Nice controls too.

Reefmack, Nemowithnoeyes, RSMreefer, snake plissken Thanks for the pep talks & encouragement re a new Tunze Skimmer. I really hope I like it & can get it installed properly when it arrives. I've read good things here about them and will be joining the Tunze 9002 Club very soon I hope. For now the RSM is skimmerless.
I've been in touch with Pinky & sent her the photo and she said the nipple should be cleaned every 2 months ... that was news to me. I think she will replace the pump on the skimmer but I've already ordered the Tunze as it usually takes awhile to receive parts from RSM.

RhinoCY84: I'm very happy to hear that your anemone withdrew from the grate. I'm keeping an eye on mine too. It has moved to the back corner near the bottom of the tank. The male clown barely leaves it, & sleeps in it at night! :)

I'm wondering if this is a key to keeping the RSM skimmer functioning properly. If it is Red Sea should tell owners this information! Of course the part may break off when cleaning it based on your situation.

Pinky said that all moving parts, connectors, etc. should be cleaned every 2 months.
She was very helpful, as always, and is sending me the pump and cooling fan for no charge. The lights are $15/each. That's pretty reasonable, too.

How does everyone else luck out. I got nowhere when asking for a cooling fan. I was told it was an upgrade and I would have to pay for it, any replacements for the loud side fans... and have to pay an "undisclosed" figure for shipping.

Figures.

But good catch on the pump. I'll have to shut mine down and see what happens.

How old is your tank and do you have the receipt for Proof of Purchase? That is strange as most of us have had great service from RSM &, Pinky is so easy to deal with.

No the tank was a "gift" of sorts. So my hang up was exactly that, no PoP, no receipt. :( I offered the serial number, to no avail.

But it did ship out quickly once we got everything straightened out. I did not opt to replace the jet engines at this time, they are only on when the MH light is on anyway. :D

That explains it, then! I have a spare set of fans ... just in case! :)

Anyone needing to replace the light bulbs: At present there are only a few left at the RSM warehouse and it will take quite a long time until a new shipment is in ... so hurry and get your order in!!!

The proprietary light bulbs are my biggest pet peeve about the RSM for this very reason. I wish they used a bulb that could be bought locally.

I haven't been watching the outlets from the overflow in my clam tank. They both got clogged with algae and the tank started to overflow yesterday. About 3 gallons of salt water flowed over a table and dripped into a pile of files. I have paper spread out everywhere drying.

On the plus side, I was overdue for a water change and this forced me to do a 3 gallon one last night :)

Kent, the shot of the parrot is great!! We pick up the new puppy on the 28th

Brent - just as I was again seriously reconsidering an overflow box and sump hook up on my RSM you had to post that you just had a tank overflow! :eek1: I'll have to reconsider my reconsidering now LOL! I'd rather do my water changes using buckets than the floor. Seriously - sorry about it happening. :(

I'm considering adding a baffle so that only one drain is used and the other one is only used as a backup. That way, the algae will only grow in one and I will see if the backup drain is being used and can clear the primary.

The problem with both drains being used is they both clog together.

The flood is my own fault. The algae has been growing in the overflow and I've been leaving it - using the overflow as a refugium. I should have been cleaning out the algae instead of letting it grow to the point where it clogged the drain lines.
