Ok, so a few people are using hang on skimmers, which works best?

That's a hard question because there is such a range available. You can get a HOT skimmer that will cost more than your RSM.
Find one that physically fits at the price point you want. One thig to check is that the pump is narrow enough to fit in the rear compartment the RSM skimmer was in.

I like Aqua C for hang ons, but for this tank, the clean look most are going for makes them go with the 9002.

That skimmer is really nice, i do miss it, lots of room can be freed up in the tank with only a pump, i can see a nice fuge in the back.

Thanks for the input everyone, I think this may be a good option for me as I do plan on hanging my 250W mh over the tank one day.
Which model did you get & how well is it made compared to the Tunze, does it work better also?
Could I just leave the skimmer cover off while still using the hood until I can make the next up-grade in lights?
One other thing, do you need that drain fitting?

I run the standard HOB Remora. There's a nano version that's a bit smaller that may be as good for the RSM. The Remora is built more sturdy than the Tunze, but most of these skimmers don't really consist of much other than plastic and some type of air gizmo or in the case of the Remora some type of injection system. I don't think the Remora would work with the hood on though - it would probably stick up too far to let you raise the hood - I have mine mounted on the back (uncut) lip. I think it's about 7 inches wide & 17 inches deep in back of ther tank - it's a much bigger unit than the Tunze. The pump hangs in the back compartment, and the water overflow from the unit also flows into the back compartment. With this, the media basket, and my ATO sensors hanging on the back lip there is zero room left in back for anything else - no room for chiller pipes. I can't compare it to the Tunze as I have the Tunze, but haven't ever had it installed long enough to skim. But the Remora skims a lot of nice dark gunk out and I'm pleased with it.
It might work with the skimmer flap removed but I'm not 100% sure. It depends on if it would fit over the back of the hood lip. And whether the cup would be too high to let you raise the rest of the hood up. The extra height of the hood lip might raise the Remora up too high to work properly. I can't remember how the hood sits on the tank in back - if it's above that back tank lip or even with it?

Is anyone here going skimmerless? I've read and heard that as long as you are not keeping alot (or any) sps that the LPS, Softies, Zoas, etc. prefer "dirtier" water as opposed to skimmed water. Anyone hear this also?
I was actually thinking about removing the skimmer and modding some type of refuge back there. That is of course a long time from now as the tank just got set up, has water, (no leaks!!! yea!!) and sand in it. started the cycle this morning with shrimp.
If i can ge the wife to send some pics, I'll get em posted. =)

Looking at Aqua C & the Nano, I don't see any differences other that 1 1/2" taller & a maxi 1200 over the 900.

I think all of the glass is tempered, so I wouldn't try that.

You can do a fuge, just keep up with water changes. A skimmer is not a must in a nano no matter what corals you are keeping.
I have the drawings and plans made and a fuge almost completed, just haven't gotten a chance to finish it just yet. I have someone in line to test it out. Basically it is my rack then onto a fuge which will allow for the proper flow.
I also have an idea for a small fuge to use with the skimmer and rack, all things in time hopefully.
You could mod something yourself with eggcrate and some acrylic.

That's not a concern with a HOT skimmer because the pump is in the RSM and the skimmer sits high enough to gravity feed back to the tank. Unlike an overflow, there is no siphon required so no siphon to fail.
Basically, since the skimmer is highest it needs to be “drilledâ€Â, not the RSM and it is molded with an outlet to drain back into the RSM instead of utilizing an overflow.
The only flood risk with a HOT is that the skimmate cup isn't emptied often enough and overflows. Since it is not over the tank some models will overflow onto the floor. Some models have line to dump the skimmate back into the tank if not emptied in time so that they don’t spill onto the floor.

So Stevie - you are "making a Fuge/media rack that will slide in where the stock skimmer is? I would love to see that when it is complete as I haven't had a skimmer in my tank for a year or so and everything is doing quite well. granted it is a 14g biocube; however, with the obligatory water changes, everything seems to be thriving quite nicely.

I would use a skimmer. It doesn't hurt anything and it gives you some leeway. Also the skimmers for the nano aren't the most efficient in the world

hi again guy's. i was wondering how you go about to post pictures, i wanna show you my tank. it is kinda altered due to chemical warfare but is know stable.
