Oh my gosh! Kent is back! I thought he had abandoned us RSMers.

Nice to see you back Kent. We miss you here.

Your tank is looking great and glad to hear that your Royal Gramma is winning the battle with the ich. Could we get a FTS please?

Pleeeeezzzzz.....

Mrs. Peer - I will never abandon you guys!
Seems to me that you were "kinda" busy with finals, weren't you? Hmmm.
Well, my time has been "kinda" divided! :p
Hope all is well with you and Aaron.... NICE CAR! If you can afford the gas???? I'm looking into a "Smart Car".....

At 6 months old, my RSM is embarrassingly sparse... BUT VERY HEALTHY and doing well. Needs a glass "scrubbing" before a FTS!

How about an FTS from you??? I read you finally got your clowns out of jail (QT) into your tank! :)

Best Regards,
Kent a.k.a. NaCl+H2O Fish

Nice progress kent...I'll have to post pics of my tank aging soon. It's been 9-10 months now and I couldn't have done it without this thread =)

On a sad note I think my lawnmower blenny is dying. He's been with me almost as long as I've had the RSM, and has been like an old friend. He was just laying there with his mouth wide open and gasping. He's been getting progressively skinnier, most likely due to no algae to eat anymore - not even on the glass. He never would touch any algae sheet I'd put in the tank, and seemed to fatten up for a while on flake & pellet food. I easily had him in the net, but he started swimming so I let him go. It might have been my only chance to get him out before he may die behind the rocks, but my heart just wasn't in it to dispose of him. Bummer. :(

Kent - Were you this "divided" or busy when you had your kid? Seems like this parrot is very high maintanence.

Thanks for the compliment on my car. My husband decided to get me one as a gift. I've had my Bimmer for almost a year now - before I had the tank. I usually don't drive it often as I have my own commuter car (Honda Civic). This black thing eats up a lot of gas though and at best I can get 19mpg. It uses 91 Octane. Of course, I wonder how nice of tank I would get if I sell my Bimmer.

Anyway, I just bought a cleaner shrimp and two purple/pink zoo colonies from the LFS. They would be a nice addition to the coral frags I have in my tank (candy cane, ricordea florida). I'll try to post some pictures soon.

I'm sorry to hear about the blenny. Are you sure it's just that he's not eating?

Not totally sure - I suppose it could be a parasite but none of the other fish are ill. The lawnmower blenny is about 15 months old, and any parasite would have had to come in with a coral, which is a possibility.

Sorry Terry.....

unfortunately i have to break the silence and with Terry's loss today I gained today.. Bought a green clown goby that is more of a blue, esp. the face so I called it smurf

DontXtripNfall - Julian... Welcome back and good luck with "Smurf"!!! Green Clown Gobies are a great addition! :D

Thanks Titans! Look forward to the pictures....

Peer - Not sure whether you were referring to my 31 yr. old "human" daughter???? She was a VERY good baby.....

Let me ask you this question...
When was the last time your Clowns needed to be put to bed or started squawking to be fed in the morning???
YOU BET that the "lizards-with-feathers" a.k.a. "Green Chickens or Quaker Parrots" are FAR MORE DEMANDING than my RSM critters!!!
WOW! Aaron must REALLY love you to give you a "Beamer" for a GIFT!!! :eek2: Happy to hear that it is your "stepping out on the town" car and NOT the everyday commuting car....

It was also a gift for him. He owns a vette and is a car nut.

At least you don't have to do daily water changes with a QT to keep the ammonia, which is a result of their poop, at bay. The parrot can just leave it's business in the cage.

DonXTripNFall - "Smurf"? That is really blue!

Hi all. I have pics of DontXtripNfall's green clown goby, but since they have Photobucket now blocked at work I'll have to post them for him tonight. It is a VERY bright blue. I don't recall ever seeing blue clown gobys?

Thanks Tangwich.

Here are Julian's pictures of the Green Clown Goby that is actually very blue! I did a search earlier and couldn't come up with anything on Blue Clown Gobies - a new color morph?

Hi Matt!

Hi Matt!

Hi Matt - Welcome to the RSM Club thread! I'll offer my comments and opinions on your questions in (parentheses) below. Anyone else please jump in with your own comments........

Q: Also, if I do end up getting it, should I remove the included biological filtration? I don't think I'll need it as I'll have plenty of live rock. I also think it will probably hold onto too many nitrates.

(I started out with the bio-media, replaced it with live rock rubble after 2-3 months, then removed it all with no negative effects on ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates. This is just my own experience - with 50 lbs. of LR added in the tank.)

Q: I'm a little skeptical on the included protein skimmer as well; Red Sea hasn't exactly rated the best on their skimmers in the past. I do know that it can't be too bad though because I haven't seen any complaints.

(Many have replaced the skimmer with a Tunze Nano 9002, and many have had good results with the stock RSM skimmer. I'll admit I replaced mine, with a hang on Remora skimmer, but I replaced the hood too, with a raised hood, just to give me more skimmer options. My RSM skimmer never did much of anything except deposit all the stuff that should have gone into the cup on the cup neck & upper chamber of the skimmer body instead. BUT, my advice is to use the stock skimmer to start with and you may be pleasantly surprised and be one of those that got one that skims well. Why spend more money if it's not needed? Wait & see.)

Q: And last, do the stock lights work well for easy corals? Do they overheat the tank? (I don't want to buy a chiller)

(The stock lights are very under rated - many are successful with the stock lights, even with SPS corals under the stock lights, typically mounted on or near the top. No problem with mushrooms, leathers, LPS, zoas , etc. On the heat - if you keep the room cool, and install the additional fan in back you may get by with no chiller and the stock hood. If the room gets hot, you may need a chiller, but that can be true with any tank. A lot really depends on the room temperature. I see your location is NC/TN - are you up in the mountains where it's cool? I'm in Charlotte, and run a raised hood with 150 W metal halide & 96 watts of actinics, and keeping the house at 70-74, and running a dual cooling fan, I can keep the tank at 79-81 with no chiller.)

Those are purely my opinions based on my own experience. Everyone has slightly different conditions, and what works for one person may not always work for another. Hopefully that will help with some of your questions. I'd like to keep up with all the separate RSM threads on Reef Central and other forums, but there aren't enough hours in the day LOL!

By the way, you could have just copied your text from your other post & pasted it in here. ;) But no biggie - I already did it!

Terry

Hi Kent, your tank isn't the only one with growth. :) A few pages back you can see mine.
I raised a robin once.. it was trained but as it got older instinct came over it and would only fly to my shoulder for food, so I released it during the summer last year.

Yup everyone thats Smurf (I was telling Terry that there was also a gray one which I found interesting anyone ever hear of these colors being availble?) Doesn't it look like a blenny in the second pic? Any word on yours Terry?... Thanks again Terry!

Matt - I'm still not to sure what to do with the media, its still inside but I'm considering taking it out because it seems everyone has eventually trashed it. The skimmer is pretty good I must say, I guess I got a good one because the skim-mate goes into the lower collection part. The stock lights are definitely under rated as Terry said. I have a few types of SPS corals and my hydnophora seems to do better near the bottom surprisingly. I use a chiller but thats because my house can get hot. I don't the lights should force you into a chiller.

I might start my tank over soon. If you notice there is Caulerpa growing over everything!!! It even grows on and THROUGH my xenia to the point if I were to rip them off it'll leave cuts in my xenia =( And if you were curious to where it had all started take a look at this picture from a month after I started my tank...look at the circled area:

Thanks a lot, Terry. That really helped out.

Doh'! I didn't think to copy and paste. (It's been a long day) lol

I forgot to add that I'm in central NC and TN, so it's not very cool.
In NC, the town is called Gibsonville and it's about 2 hours from Charlotte, an hour from Raleigh, and a half an hour from Greensboro; I'm right in between the latter two.
