Red Sea Reefer 170 build thread

My blue reef chromis have white stringy poop. Fortunately they are already on day two of prazipro. I have found that proactively doing prazipro and paragard in QT has been beneficial. They are also both very gentle on fish. Other treatments I only do as needed if I see a specific disease.

How's the skimmer doing? See any difference between that and simplicity?

Can't say yet as I have used a lot of jb water weld recently and it's making the skimmer go crazy. However the little bit I have used it it's just as good as the simplicity was but more appropriately sized. I love how tiny the footprint is as it gives me a lot of room in the sump!

Latest updates:

I had two blue reef chromis in QT, one died - the smaller one. At first I thought maybe it was flukes or something but I've been treating prazipro proactively. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the big one killed the little one. I know chromis do that sometimes. So I'll just stick with the one chromis.

I purchased the reef octopus varios 2 for my return pump. I'm saving the vectra M1 for the 180g and as a backup return pump for now. The vectra M1 is fantastic so I'm keeping it for the 180 since it should have more than enough to give me the 7x overturn I want. I used a 3/4" PVC pipe to 3/4" female thread that I glued into the 1" PVC that comes with the varios. Then used a male 3/4" thread to 5/8" bib for the return hose.

I'm impressed with the varios. It comes with a float switch for kill and also has a controller for variable return flow speeds and feed mode etc. It's supposed to be able to connect to my apex so that I can fully control those features with the apex, but I have to figure out how to do it. I also installed my triple TDS meter, and am selling my lightly used double TDS meter. Today I also received my vertex 300 micron filter socks which I'm happy to say are a DIRECT FIT replacement for the ones on the reefer 170! Plus with the 300 micron I won't have to clean them as often.

Lastly my skimmer is almost back to normal again after the JB water weld was making it go crazy the past week. It's pulling wet skim but as it settles more I'll be able to dial in a skim that is darker and more dry.

Also, on the way I have the apex WXM module which means I'll be able to control the MP10s and radion fully through the apex, then eliminate the reeflink and sell that too. I also have a milwaukee instant digital refractometer on the way so I'll sell my lightly used ATC one. And lastly also on the way is a used BRS dosing pump (for the 180g).

Any updates?

Latest update!

So, there was a line spot wrasse that came up on diver's den that is ok for a tank my size and I couldn't pass it up. I put him into the DT right away as in my history of experience wrasses do not do well in QT. He is healthy as an Ox, eats great, and does his color flashing all the time and seems to be enjoying himself.

On another note, the one blue reef chromis I had has disappeared overnight. Not sure where he disappeared off to, but the blenny was chasing him pretty often. My blenny is a dick lol. He chased the wrasse too but the wrasse is as big as he is and the wrasse gives it back, so the blenny leaves him alone now. So I'm thinking either the blenny got the best of the chromis, or the chromis wandered into the nem at some point. The nem is HUGE so that's possible. The chromis was small, maybe 1.5".

I installed the varios without issue, and it's a great pump. Just as quiet as the vectra was. The icecap skimmer is performing great! I am very pleased with it, and it definitely is more appropriately sized to my tank. The WXM module was very easy to set up, and it's now running my radion and vortechs. There are some things the WXM cannot do that the reeflink/ecosmartlive can do, but I do like that I can control it all within my controller now.

I also picked up some more coral, so pics below!

Nem is big.

This acan has grown a ton since I got it. It has about 5 new heads plus the 4 now are huge.

New favia I picked up. Large frag, really nice color.

Wrasse is really hard to get a pic of because he moves so much.

Awesome chalice I also picked up. Big frag too. Probably 3-4" easy.

I've also started buying gear for my 180g. I picked up two brand new xr30w G4 pros for a great deal from someone who bought and never even opened them. I'll be putting the pros on the outside and the normal G4 in the middle where there will be some open space between two rock islands in the 180g. Also bought two like new Mp40wqd. Actual full qd not upgraded wes models. Lots of people don't realize that the Mp40wqd requires not just the driver/controller but also a new wet side and dry side to get the higher flow.

Also got a quote from a pro moving company for $300 to pick up the new 180 from my lfs and bring it 40 miles to my house and put it on the stand in the basement. Great deal considering it's 300 pounds empty!

How's the skimmer doing?

Great. Icecap is awesome!

Crazy growth on this birdsnest already in the short couple weeks I've had it.

When I bought this Acan a month ago, it had 3 heads. Today it has about 10. It's growing like mad! You can see lots of new heads, and there's more all around the other sides as well.

This nem has gotten HUGE since I got it. Ron saw it yesterday too when he was here.

How do you figure that the Simplicity skimmer was too much skimmer? Is the IceCap actually pulling stuff?
