I have a 75 gal reef tank 6 weeks young. I have in it 50 lbs of cured aged rock an 100lbs of new cured rock. My chemistry is excellent. LAst week I've notice new growth on my rocks, red slime. I don;t think I'm over feeding and perform 20% water change witjh ro filter two weeks ago.

How can I get rid of this slime?????

Since we don't know what your water parameters are do you test for phosphate ?

Post your water parameters

You can increase flow in the area where slime is growing.

Remove what you can by vacuum.

Cut back on feeding

Remove nutrients from system.

Last but not least it is just part of a young tank.

red slime away or remover will do the trick....it did for me...but b careful bcuz as ur red slime dies away it will provide nutrients for some other nuscience algae.....once u use it, perform a 30 to 40 percent water change 2 days after and keep an eye on ur parameters......

Cyano is a result of excess nutrients within the tank .. primarily phosphates. Very common in new tanks and often the result of the phosphates released by the decomposing crud within the live rocks.

Use a phosphate remover and increase frequency/quantity of water changes using RO water. Treat the cyano as an inexpensive phosphate binder and periodically siphon it out along with the phosphates/nitrates it has been eating.

Red Slime Algae is also known as Cyano aka Cyano Bacteria.

hahaha ... alright thanks kev... i'll let you know when i get rid of it all.. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for all your replies....this is a great help. I purchased a chemical called Red Slime Remover and I noticed an increase of bubbles in my protien skimmer. This morning the slime has reduced and tommorrow I'm going to do a 20% water change and keep an eye on the feeding and water circulation...
