Red Slime/ Cyanobacteria Removers

I know that it will decrease the oxygen level in the tank. I would just manually remove it. How is the refuge coming along? Any pics of the Red slime or Cyanobacteria? Thanks

when mine was about to break out, lower light schedule, small water change, and refugium fully grown in took care of it in a week. oh and less feedings.

meaning at the beginning i only had a handfull of plants in there, now its to the brim and have to take some out. kinda like an established refugium compared to one just set up i guess.

I am now using phosban in a reactor and it took care of the red slime in my tank

Erik--after I am done with 2LittleFishes PO4 absorber, going back to phosban. The media worked great on PO4 levels and saw instant reduction of all algae's.

Tim--what are your water parameters? what type of water you using? Feedings? How old are the bulbs? Everyone's outbreaks are a little different. But if you can answer these questions, we maybe able to get to the root cause of the algae outbreak.

Sweet glad that reactor is being put to good use!

yeah it is up and running great. Thanks Andy I apreciate it. I am stil debating on wheter to take the stand apart to fit a 20gal tall sump or just go with a 10 gal sump and not have to move the tank. once I figure that out I will be putting the overflow to good use aswell. I already got the aqualift from Steffen for the overflow.

When I realized I could not fit the 75 gal in my stand, I thought about the 40L and a 10 gal above it on a stand for the refuge.

If I had one of those tall skinny stands I would do something like this.

First thought was to put the skimmer where the refuge was, but would be hard to get the flow right I would think.

I try to think of ways to make the entire inside of the stand water. :twitch:

Everything looks good. NO3 is a little high. Do you have a DSB or regular sand bed? If you have a regular sand bed that is about 1-2" in depth, you may want to vacuum the sand. It most probably has high, undissolved nutrients in it and causing your NO3 readings to be a bit on the high side. I would vacuum the sand (in 1/3rd increments) when you do your water changes. So every water change, do 1/3 of the sand bed and so on till you completely have done the sand bed.
If you changed out the lights 8 months ago, it may be time to buy new ones. The spectrum on halides/T5 over the course of the months, will loose its light spectrum from blue (10k and above) to the yellow and red spectrum's (8k and under).

light schedule? and feeding schedule?
Yeap, I was going to ask too. Try to cut back on your feedings and amounts. So if you are feeding everyday, go to every other to 3 day to feed. hope this helps and keep us posted.

Tim, has anything changed about the flow in the tank? Low flow areas seem to be where the problem always starts. Just because you have a zero reading on something really doesn't always mean anything. It could be a false reading or it could be that the nutrients are being used up by the problem algae or bacteria. Make sure a power head has not slowed way down or maybe even not working. The phosban works really well in that area.

feeding once daily. Have about 2" regular sand bed. Large watchman goby sifts sand and keeps is looking good. Actinics come on at 8:00am and are on till 8:00pm. 10K come on at 9:00am and are off at 5:00pm.

I brushed off most of red slime yesterday so maybe I can just keep it off that way.

just cut down on the lights for now. like actinics 8hrs, and others accordingly. dont think they need to be on for so long.
