Has anyone seen these locally? I've been looking for something different for my tank. I think this may be what I was looking for. Anyone have any previous experience with these? I also have over 50 hermits, 50 ceriths and 10 nar snails....would these be ok with the cardinal? TIA

Hey Ryan. That looks like Apogon maculatus from Gulf of Mexico. Gets large for a cardinal, might appreciate cooler water temp, supposedly can be aggressive. Are you sure you're not looking for Fowleria flammea from the Indo-Pacific? Similar coloration, smaller, and peaceful?

I've never seen them (either fish) locally. Most wholesalers use common names on their lists, so if you were to order them locally you might end up with one or the other. A month or two ago when I made the rounds in Sac I didn't see any of them, but I did see some of the orange lined cardinals (Apogon cyanosoma) at Jo Jo's. Those are also a nice looking fish (and stay small and peaceful).

I had thought about adding a few F. flammea to my tank also. Live Aquaria carries them regularly. If you're thinking about placing an order (from Live Aquaria) I'll go in with you pending on the time frame.

You are absolutely right Jake, one too many beers had me post the wrong picture. The Fowleria flammea is the one I was looking at. I knew the black dot looked odd...

I will probably order the Fowleria flammea from LA in February if its available. I'm in no rush to get other fish especially with the Holidays upon us. I was looking at the Apogon as well but decided I needed the red color in my tank of mostly green corals :)

Here is the pic I originally meant to post

Did you guys ever end up with these fish? If so, can you share some info about them? Are they agressive? How are they in a group? Are they good shippers? Are they really that red? Feeding?

I got one from LA two weeks ago and it never comes out of it's cave..Pretty fish but it would be nice if it came out every now and then..

I purchased six wanting to add a little red color to my display tank, also thinking they would behave like my pajama cardinals. Nope. From the start in the quarantine tank they just stayed in the same spot in the bottom right corner, never taking advantage of the 30 gallons of swimming space. The most active I ever saw them was when I went after them with the net during the transfer process. Now they just hide in the rock, barely making an appearance. My wife was also disappointed in the way they looked. For us, these were a bust. Live and learn.

Update....

They might be shy, but they're mean little bastages. I watched one come out of a cave and attack a yellow rose goby that was as big as he was. Just came out and folded the other fish in half. Didn't try to eat him.....just killed him. If I could catch them the entire lot would be banned to the sump or the extra fuge. Stay away from this one.
