Red Tail Tamarin Wrasse

Saw this cool looking fish at my Lfs. Looks like a clown red/blue speckled face about 4 in long. Anyone know any info about this fish in a fowlr tank. I also have a few other fairy wrasses so is this one peaceful generally (seemed to be at the lfs)

Anampses chrysocephalus is a very difficult species to keep in my experience. By the sounds of your description it sounds like you came across a male which are hard to come across and imo more difficult to keep than females. They basically eat off of Pods in the tank and even eating prepared foods they seem to slowly die off. I've tried multiple times with specimens eating prepared foods very well and unfortunately didn't succeed. Definitely one for a very established tank with peaceful fish. They are not ones to defend themselves against others.

I have three of them, two females one male. The males have the orange head. I do find them to be very hard. They are fussy, slow eaters, because they like to chew their food and spit it out, chew again, etc. Not a good thing to do when there are other fish that like food. They ship badly and they don't like changes. And they need lots of food, if you get one that eats cause most of them don't and die very soon. They are peaceful and shy, not a good fish for a fish only.

I have 7 tamarins in a 1000g peaceful reef, and I feed 20+ times a day.

I had a few too they do well on stablished tank with deep sand bed and feed them at least 6 x a day unless they are the only wrasse in the tank because the are slow eater

I still have my small yellow tail tamarin for over a year now even though I have shallow sand and lots of fish ( 100+) but I feed a minimum of 6 times a days ( pellets )

Here is my new guy. Hope he defies the odds of what I have read about how difficult they can be. Good 1st day though swimming around and eating, and he is now off in hiding asleep...(I hope). Sorry for the poor clarity but he is a beauty.

Yes, 20+ times a day. A mix of mysis, artemia, lobster eggs, red and green plankton, krill, flakes, pellets, nori, etc.

Good that he is eating but don't feel too safe yet. I have had ones that eat and still die and I have had ones that didnt eat and looked very bad, and survived.
