Of all the plumbing, the one that concerns me the most is the elbow going into the OM device. That is a drain sweep. I'd really prefer to see a real fitting that has a 1" socket on each end. The one you have is 1/2", and that isn't a lot of material for it to grip, considering it is the closed loop with a ton of flow.
Yea, I wasn't too sure about that one either. I wanted to minimize how hard the 90 was...

I'll head by the hardware store this evening and see what I can find.

I hate to tell you to redo it because it is so pretty, but this is a VERY important spot in your plumbing, and you never want to have to deal with it ever again.

Agreed. It will be pretty easy to correct.

And here we are with the sand transferred over from the old tank:

I need a LOT more sand! :)

Next step, filling the tank with water!

Ed, there aren't any unions after the OM device, which you want so you can close them when you have to service the drum. Same for the feed to the OM device. Since you have to change that sweep out, that's the perfect time to add a union there as well.

There are unions on the shutoff valves.

And one final shot for the evening:

I am out here. The tank is half filled with water. I am going to let everything settle down and hopefully stock it in the morning.

Later!

Your kids are funny. Looks like they like it in there. Just wait until they have to hold their breath for those pictures. :D

Now that I have some water in it they actually want to get back in. I am considering letting them since it's something they will talk about for years.

Any reason I should not let them? I know many are concerned about getting deodorant and other things off the body into a tank, but luckily they are young and not at that stage.

Nice tank. Thats one awesome office to work at! Id get no work done, since id be staring at the fish tank lol
Tell me about it. My desk is right on the other side and it takes a lot of discipline to stay focused. (although it does help clear the mind by taking a break and loosing yourself in the reef)

I'll have my web camera up in less than a month so you can join me and stare at the tank all day! :)

I think it'll be fine at first. You might have them rinse their hair extra good regarding shampoo - but usually we do that enough anyway. Just no hair products before they jump in.

Put that skimmer to the test: Throw in three pests and see what happens. :D

We talked about that earlier. He has two ballvalves almost directly under the bulkheads. So the water in the plumbing is all that will drain out.

Myself, I prefer to have the ballvavles right before and after a device, to limit how much water pours out when it has to be opened up.

I might have normally done that but I wanted a natural curve on the flex PVC to minimize resistance.

I have a powerful wet/dry shop vac that I use whenever I open any of this stuff up so I don't make a mess. (I didn't spill a drop when I cut open the flex to install that union and better elbow.)

Awesome. I'll definitely be following this thread. Whenever my family makes a trip and is heading that way, we'll definitely have to stop by.
