rEd86's 700g office tank.

OK, we are starting to make progress. I just installed a Vortex diatom filter in the sump. Melev talked about it in his thread:

Brian's trying to convince me to buy a Diatom Filter, and I think he's succeeding. It seems like a very simple device, and has made his tank shine on many occasions when it was deemed necessary. He's most recently discovered how well it works when dosing Lanthanum chloride, which drops his PO4 to zero within hours, and the livestock remains completely unaffected. Before that, he would dose it in the system and he noticed the clams were very unhappy afterwards, plus PO4 wouldn't drop lower than .03. Now it hits 0 as expected.

I've wanted to remove the particles that are REAL apparent in the tank when you're looking in zoom mode with the web camera. It's a pretty straight forward setup. Here's a photo of it installed:

Water is pumped into the chamber and a fine filter removes any particles to "polish" the water. I don't know how effective this will be on a large tank like mine but I figured it was worth trying. I might just have to clean it more frequently than I would otherwise because of the volume of water it has to clean.

My female clown fish is also started to nest again. She is still choosing the return instead of the tile I placed in the tank but I can't gather the eggs at this point anyway so I can't complain. I'm just glad the tank is in a condition where she is laying eggs.

I've added a few more frags this week and expect to pick up a lot more this weekend. I will see about taking some photos on Monday when I get everything situated.

That's it for now.

Keep in mind that the Diatom filter is only meant to be run for a couple of days, not full time. Talk to Paul if you need more hands on experience, since he's been using them on and off for about 15 years. His username is reefkeeper2.

The seventh day after she lays eggs watch 2 hours after you turn out the lights, thats when mine always hatched. The fish & corals go crazy over the "food".

Mine laid every 14 days.

Understood.

I think the only problem with this tank will be, everybody else in the building coming to your office to take their lunch breaks, better provide some soft chairs for them.

True. I already have the UPS & FedEx people stopping for a moment to see how it is progressing any time they deliver something. I also need some kind of checkin so I can track who is coming online and watching via the web. I am planning on getting a couple of 5' benches to put in front of it to have a place for people to sit while they are looking at everything.

My Uncle invented that filter years ago. Made a bunch of money. Always neat to see them in use today.

sorry to hear you are selling it. I have gone out via web to see it several times, although not for a while.
Are you going to setup a new tank of any size once you get to the new location?

I haven't figured out what I am going to be doing in the new space yet. I will have something, although not even close to a 700g. Ironically I might start with a nano until I have a good handle on everything! :)
