Reddish Maroon Algae Killing Zoanthids??

You could have red coraline and at the same time, getting cyano. They are almost exactlly the same color. Coraline won't kill zoanthids.

When I had cyano I sucked it all out at water changes. Then I shortened my light cycle and increased the flow in my tank. I did a total lights out for 2 days at first.

Looks like some cyno and the start of red bubble algae. red buble algea will crowd out your polyps and iritate them, and cyno will cover/choke them out.

I use maracyn (erethromyacin) for cyno and manual removal/tank husbandry for the bubble algea. In worst case cenario w/ the bubble algea- you might want to think about fragging the polyps off the plug/rock they are on, and relocating them. I have had a bit of sucess with this.

If you arer running a bac driven system- you might want to into maracyn befor using this product. I am testing it as a dip, outside the main system at this time w/ bacteria driven systems.

ya def looks like red coraline algae, i have plenty in my tank and never had a problem with my zoas. Its weird that it would cause your frags to die out.

Looks like cyano to me. I did battle with the red menace and it would cover rocks where you couldn't scrape it off, but I bet you can blast it off of the polyps with a turkey baster. I did a week of lights out and did a dance of joy when there was no red carpet on my sand. The stuff on the rocks took longer to go away. I now do a period of no light for at least two days every month

I am having the same issue.
Previously healthy, vigoruosly growing zoe is now closing up.
Hard, bright red node of unidentifiable stuff growing through the middle of colony.
I agree it looks like coraline, but I dont see why it would affect the zoe.
Polyps next to hard red node closed up for last 3 days.
If anyone has a clue what this is and how to treat it would be appreciated.
I attempted to remove it but it is hard like coraline and not possible to mechanically remove without destroying zoe.

I have that type. It is encrusted on the frag disk. Mine did not attack the zoas directly, but if the algea has a foot hold on the disk surface, zoa can not grow on it.

I tried to scrape it off with a razor blade, but they just come back with a vengeance. I like to know a good way to deal with it. I know that crabs and snails do not eat this algea.
