Rediculous LFS advice

I had a funny thought when I was posting in another thread about a phantom zoa spider. What is the worst, funniest advice that a LFS has given you? I'm not trying to pick on any specific store, it could be petco, walmart, or the salt shops.

I was told that mouthwash makes a good coral dip.

funniest I heard was silicone a glass of honey upside down under your deep sand bed. Still scratching my head on that one. Also putting vodka or tequila on the frag wound lol. That was a classic.

Miss the days when Tropical Kingdom had employees telling people there is no need to acclimate any fish and plopping fish back and forth from tank to tank as proof. Then hearing the fish died soon after.

I had an employee tell me that redbugs were pods....

Not advise, just an experience... i wanted a fish from a LFS and i couldbt buy it because the employee couldnt catch it... he went in with a net and i told him no net, use a container... container attempt=Failed....then came the net, Net=fail.... Fishtrap with food in it=fail.... i ended up sayig nvm lol

How can you work at a FISH store and not be able to catch them??

The worst was when I went to Majestic when I was looking to set up my first tank. The owner(?) talked to me a bit, and then proceeded to tell me Nobody uses glass for reef tanks because of the green tint to the glass, gotta go with acrylic. Really?

Then she told me that I didn't want to try to set a tank up myself, I should buy everything through them, and they could set it all up for me. My response was...well, where's the fun in that? Thankfully I never bought any equipment from them, but they did get me for several over-priced fish & aiptasia infested corals before I learned my lesson.

Few years back I was told that I couldn’t keep LR alive without intense lighting. Carbon is not good in SW. Algae is the signs of a healthy tank lol! You’ll never be able to keep SPS w/ T5’s. Corallife skimmers are the best. Red sea prism skimmers are one of the best. I replied with, “What do you think about a octopus?” I got, “oh those things are crap.” Needless to say I unfortunately bought a superskimmer. You can never overdose a A&B addictive. Some poor guy was told, “ya when I started using B-ionic all kinds of stuff started sprouting, kenya trees and all kinds of stuff.” I overheard a LFS employee say that thier LR was fine and should have no die off because it had been wrapped in newspaper. I later found out had been sitting in the boxes for days, it smelt like rotten eggs.

I know where these word were spoken, and I heard them time and time again as I replaced Supa Skimmers with octopus. The sole reason he pushes em cause they are available from Central and lee Mar. All Rock spends time in a box with newspaper. The minimum being about 24hrs it would take to fly it in, but most is sent on boats..........

When I was brand new to the hobby, Tropical kingdom told my son that clowns ($30 a pop and you should get a pair) were excellent fish for cycling. Needless to say....:(

That is how they did it back in the day. Know a fish guy in Phoenix that did it at job sites during installs lmao. Can you imagine paying someone 20k to install a custom tank in your huge million dollar house then walking in on him peeing in your tank.....

I can't stop laughing...

One of the above mentioned stores told me to put a fluval canister instead of a skimmer on my first reef setup.

Imagine explaining that to your new customer"¦."Um, I don't know how to say this but **** is really good for establishing your tank. You guys mind stepping out for a minute I really gotta go." :o

I was in Petco once and overheard an employee telling a customer that a yellow tang could be acclimated to their freshwater tank.

Also, a friend of mine BOUGHT asterina stars for like $5 a pop from a former store that shall remain unnamed (it rhymes with Tragestic) because they told him they were rare Caribbean dwarf stars...
