You'll get more answers here.

It's OK to do, with a few caveats.
You have to make sure you don't remove a huge percentage, or you could run into problems with the biological filter and you'll be running through another cycle.
Obviously you need to take care not to drop any rocks on your corals or fish, or crush them against the glass.
Sometimes you can have dead zones under the rocks; if this happens, you can release hydrogen sulfide when you move them. In that case, you'll get a whiff of rotten eggs. That's bad. H2S is extremely toxic. For that reason, it's a good idea to have a lot of water ready for a waterchange ahead of time.

^Yep. If I am going to do a major rescape on a tank that has been running for any length of time, I try and do it the same day I plan on doing a water change. Move the rocks around and then siphon out as much of the crud as I can. If I move rocks off the sand bed I also try and siphon any large piles of debris I find as I go.

Good advice ^ you may want to have a large buck with SW in it to place your rocks while you redo your scape. It will cut down on die off of the rocks going back in. Just a thought

well what i was going to do is take a spare tank i have fill it with water from my tank get the temp right and put all the corals and fish in that tank for the time being. Then take out most of the water and add a little more sand and move my rocks.?

yea and moving around aquascape can spike your amonia due to movment of the sand. also +1 to the bio filter problem.

so if i do it the way i posted above would it give me a better chance of not harming anything? id also be pretty much doing a full water change....

I just completed a major (whole tank) re-aquascaping of a really old tank. I pulled the LR out of one small area and stuck it in a bucket, vacuumed the sand under where the rock was (disgusting too), then moved the rock I wanted into that area over. Repeat. Worked great and had zero ammonia spike.

I did get a little cloudy water from moving the rock and vacuuming the sand, so right after the water cleared I changed all my filter pads and was good to go.

I do rescapes all the time with no issues. I just put the extra rock down in my sump.

I don't remove any water, honestly, and the fish and corals are always fine. Sure, it is a great time to do a water change since you're stirring things up, but no need to change all the water. Just my non-professional opinion though.

I just did a rescape on my reef tank on Tuesday. Took less than hour to move my rocks and place the small rocks I didn’t like in the Dt to the sump. Just make sure you have spare water on the side in case if you need to do a water change. I didn’t need to since I did a 25% Monday night. I put all my coral in a 5 gallon bucket, used a pitcher for my hermits. I siphoned all the debris into my sump sock. Then after cleaned my sock out and cleaned my skimmer after it was finished going nuts.
