Reef Aquarium Related Infections

In the last 9 months I have had two very bad tooth infections in the same exact tooth. I have had a root canal on this tooth. I have my reef aquarium in my bedroom where I sleep.

- Is it possible that airborne bacterias from my reef infected my tooth?

- Is it possible that my tooth was infected from mouth contact with the aquarium water?

- Could I have got the infection from just say... brushing my arm across my face while working on the tank?

- Maybe, (Hopefully) it has nothing to do with my aquarium, and it is common to get infections after getting a root canal?

I should also mention that the first time I got the infection, I let it go for awhile and it moved to my upper calf in both legs. It was different in my legs though. It was not a throbbing pain. It was a sharp knife stabbing pain when I started to walk. It was so bad, I had to sit down and take breaks from walking. I could walk maybe 200 yards before having to take a break. I went on Clindamyacin (spellcheck) and it cleared it up pretty fast. 9 months later boom! I am taking the same antibiotic again. It is working slower than before.

Thanks for the help.

I highly doubt your tooth infection is in any way related to your aquarium, unless your in the habit of chewing on things in your tank ;)

Nope...very doubtful that it's from the tank (using coral as a toothpick?). Follow the advice of all dentists...brush, floss and cut back of soda.

Good luck with the tooth!

I have often wondered that myself. When I suck on a hose to syphon the water and a little gets in my mouth later the next day I find that my throat gets kind of sore. I think there may be a link there. JMO

I got a root canal becasue I broke my two front teeth on my bike in fifth grade. I got the root canal back in fifth grade though.

I hope you're seeing a medical doctor about this? What you're reporting could be extremely serious. You're saying that you believe a bacterial infection in your tooth moved to both legs, is that correct?

I have never heard of that before but I do remember reading of a case where an untreated tooth infection spread to the brain and the child died as a result. By the time he was taken to the hospital, it was too late to safe him.

See your dentist about the tooth infection but if it moves to your legs or any place else, see a medical doctor immediately.

Good luck,

Its gone now. I feel fine. I am seeing a specialist in the next week or so. They think it is nasal related now instead of tooth related. Go figure.

BTW, my infection would have to get extremely bad before it spread to my brain. I would never let it get that bad.

If I read this correctly, this infection is systemic and is already "extremely bad". How can you possibly know what part of the body is next? Follow your doctor's orders exactly. Good luck.

It's not very likely as most bacteria are actually kind of picky about their living conditions, temperature, saliniity, pH etc. and most bacteria living in your marine tank are going to have different requirements than your body can provide. Also, not likely that they are going to be airborn

I know, I was just throwing some wild idea out there to see if I could get something interesting going. I actually cured the infection by eating a whole clove of raw garlic. Yum! Not only did I smell good, but it drained out my infection in 12 hours!

I got an infection in one of my root canals. Had to take antibotics. if that does not work then you have to retreat the root canal because the dentist did not clean it out properly.

I'm sure you will be fine. Mmotown I've gotten a sore throat after sucking down a mouthful of sumpwater before too. I doubt it's anything to worry about though. It does make me want to quit the hobby when it happens though! :)
