Reef Breeders vs...

So I was wanting to get some new LEDs which can grow all the corals. The light I have right now is okay but I dont think its strong enough.

My local salt water shop recommends Reef breeders and I would have to get the Photon 48" which is 500 dollars

I was wondering if there was any other LED light (even if its two of them) that might be a little cheaper then 500 and still have the same positive results for corals as the reef breeders. My tank is 48" long x 21" tall and 18" Deep.

Any advise to which lights to look at would be great.

Thank you

... Which are largely the same as reefbreeders.

At that price point you're probably best with either one. It's a great value for LEDs.

I don't like how close together the other chinese led's place there diodes. With the t247 you get a larger coverage with the same amount of led's.

They are more slim (look more modern) and they are less expensive.

Also, having 2 fixtures is an advantage. If something should go wrong with the 48" fixture, your tank is without light. If the same thing happens when you have 2 fixtures, you only lose half your light and it's much less of a dire emergency that needs to be fixed in a day or two. Your tank will survive on half light for weeks.

I've got these and really like them. http://m.ebay.com/itm/MarsAqua-Dimm...ull-Spectrum-LPS-SPS-Coral-Reef-/370857093101
The light will be noticeably better than your orbits, but for $85 you dont get a remote control. You can dim the blues and whites separately, but there's no programability. So I dimmed mine to where I want them and then used the timers you get at a hardware store to plug a lamp into when you go on vacation. So they turn on and off at the times I've set, but not gradual like a sunrise. People grow just about everything under these lights, but I'm just getting into coral so no personal experience

I use similar Ebay/Chinese/LED's
Been using them for years. This is all you need to grow ANY coral.
If you turn them all the way up, you will fry things- very powerful/high PAR

Of course, you can't do thunderstorms (well actually you could- these can be put thru an APEX Fusion- if you have one- I don't)

Or you could spend 6-7X as much for a similar light- and go with a Radion Pro!

Edit- See my avatar? That's a side view shot of my current 180, with chinese LED's

I can't comment on others mentioned but I can say Reef Breeders have done great by me. Both SPS and Lps loving my Photon 48 and I can also say you will see great response and service on Reef Breeders forum here in Sponsor section. That's important.

I got Viparled from eBay best thing I went from the same lights u have mine are the current orbit marine led 24-36 and I got the Chinese led they are awesome

If you don't need dimmable then get 2 Reef breeders Superlux, built-in timer and has legs. I'm running one on my 28 Bowfront and coverage and intensity is great.

These are the Super Lux's (same, but different spectrum) from Reef Breeders...which I can vouch for...I have 4 of them.

I know for a fact..from phone conversations and meeting him in person...Logan from Reef Breeders is reason alone to go with that company:

I've got two T247's from Ocean Revive and love them. Got the upgraded ones with the remote control and only one power plug.

They're all basically the same. I used to run reef breeders photon's and now i run $75 eBay boxes. Results? Exactly the same.

At less than $80 a box why pay more? Even if you wanted to pay for the benefits of a longer USA warranty your still waaaaaaay overpaying for the box/warranty vs the eBay boxes.

A 'box' is a Chinese led fixture which gets called a 'box' because most of them are rectangular box shaped cases.

Soap box mode on:

There are companies in China that make all the various parts that go into making led fixtures. One makes drivers, another makes cases, another makes led circuit boards, another makes the controller, another one make cooling fans, etc., etc. All these companies want to profit from high volume to keep prices down and profits up and keep other competitors from entering the market.

Then a few other companies buy parts from these various suppliers and assemble actual led fixtures. These companies may or may not sell fixtures directly. But they also make and/or sell fixtures to other 'resellers' who may or may not change the name of the fixture. Some resellers do enough volume that they can get the manufacturer to do 'custom' fixtures and some resellers actually design the fixture and the manufacturer makes it exclusively for that reseller.

Some of the Chinese manufacturers, like EverGrow, understand global markets and the fact that many, like the US, want quality products. Other manufacturers will cut corners like using cheaper fans (noisy and prone to failure), or they don't use real heat sinks but just a thin sheet of aluminum, or they don't use stainless steel screws. A couple even get so cheap they use 0.3 watt leds rather than 3.0 watt leds, these guys are just stealing your money. To these guys, it's all about making an already inexpensive fixture even cheaper and being able to cut costs, lower their price and try to capture a bigger share of the market.

The problem is, they end up making really cheap fixtures (low price) but they are also low quality fixtures and that is what causes so many people to call Chinese products junk. They can make good or even great quality products, like most of the things they build for american owned companies, like Apple. But the Chinese companies are just beginning to see that they can increase their market share and improve brand loyalty by making better quality products.

But a lot of Chinese companies still want to build cheap junk and unfortunately, many customers worldwide are still looking for great deals and willing to buy the cheap junk.

I have bought and used a lot of Chinese led fixtures in the last 3-4 years. I have some that have been working perfectly for 3 years now. But I've bought some that failed (or started to rust away) after only a year or less. And even more scary is there are a couple of 'quality' brand name US companies that actually sell some of the cheapest junk in the market.

Ebay is kind of a wild west dumping ground for product. They really cheap guys sell there because they can find market share there. And some of the quality resellers sell there because they need to compete and keep sales volume up. Look and see who is confident enough in their products and customer service to pay RC to advertise here and keep a Sponsor Forum. A place where you can actually discuss products and quality and customer service. If they don't have a sponsor forum here, ask yourself, "Why not?"

There are several that are pretty much interchangeable. The one I linked to upthread is an example of the type that David is talking about. You can read about "black boxes" or "Chinese LEDs" generally and then just pick one off eBay if you decide they are for you.

I mean obvi, post a link before you actually buy one, just at this stage of the decision vendor is irrelevant

Pretty much agree with Ron Reefman

I'm personally using eBay boxes sold by "topledseller" on eBay and the boxes are AquaStar brand.
