Reef Check Foundation has issued an URGENT CALL TO ACTION

YOU think we are having an effect and have you changed? I have done more than you ever will AND I don't think we are having any real effect. I guess since my efforts are not to "save the planet" they don't really count though huh?

Virginia, I'm not preaching what we should do. I really am not. Since you asked, I waste a fair amount of energy in many forms. I drive a V8 car, fly a lot, eat imported food, don't own solar cells, blah blah. I don't do all that much to conserve, only really the little things where I can (use cold water most of the time, walk when I can, turn the heat down etc.).

My argument is twofold:

First, everything does add up. Though individual actions may seem insignificant they can have an impact in some way (negative or positive).

Secondly, I don't think people will change their consumption patterns (etc.) unless the individual truly believes that they are having an impact (negative or positive). Unless people have legislation or economic incentive to alter their patterns they won't change (why would they?).

So I think I'm a lot closer to being on the same page with you than you think.

Again, I wouldn't call myself and environmentalist. Yes, I think that there are many environmental issues present now and they will continue to persist unless some change is made from our end. However, I'm not out signing petitions as you suggest. I believe in human ingenuity and technology, though there must be limits to what it can accomplish.

i think that is a little far fetched but a start in the right direction.

i would like to do what i can to save our natural reefs from being destroyed

Online petitions are just about worthless and aren't admissible in court. Most of these are feeble attempts to harvest email addresses to sell them for big bucks to the spammers.

Enjoy the junk mail.

I'm not sure if you're referring to my post GraviT. If you are, have another read.

the 500w-1000w/hour your reef might use is squat in the big picture...i mean, just think of the millions of street lamps in the U.S., each probably 300w-500w that burn all night for no real good reason outside of detering crime. How about the state aquariums, 24/7 wawa's/711's,the billboards in time square, etc etc. I think we all realize that we collectlively are destroying the planet, but until you get some mandatory laws or something, if everyone isn't on board then it really doesn't matter does it?

HAha... Wawa. You must be from the Philly area.
I brought my wife back east one time and she busted up laughing when I told her to stop off at Wawa for some snacks.

Including the fish food you feed your fish. Most is wild caught fish turned into mash and them modled into flake form.

Yeah, but little of that comes from the reef. Most of it comes from the grand banks, Pac-NW, Alaska, or temperate south america I would assume. There is not as much commercial fishing in the reef areas b/c there are little nutrients to support big populations.

Not that it makes it "right", but since we are talking about reefs here, lets stay on topic.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the food we feed our fish is end of the line fish scraps from fish that were caught initially for other purposes.

I wasn't referring to any post in particular, just stating what I have observed in my career in IT and what we communicate to our end users.

I believe that there was a "Dirty Jobs" that showed the life of some fish scraps. They were pulverized and turned into fertalizer I believe. At least at this one facility. I'm sure that it is about the same for the fish food.

Waste Not-Want Not.

i the first half i read you'all sound like little bit-hes IMO. you want to collect but not protect. good then scoop it all out and see what happens. i'll probally be dead when we can't collect anyway but that's really inconsiderate to the next gen. people like those really get my blood pumping. just don't say it to my face cause i might not have a key board in my way. they probally have profanity removed ugly tanks anyway.

That's the spirit!

This whole Responsible Reefkeeping forum seems to bring out the worst in us all...

First off... I do not believed we are "doomed". I leave that to the evangelists and environmentalist.
Second... the ONLY point I have been consistently trying to point out is the utter hypocrisy of your movement. You all patt yourselves on the back for signing a petition (that not a SINGLE reef keeper can actually abide by) or screwing some PC light bulbs in or even worse...try to pawn of your guilt of keeping a reef tank by saying it's educational or "for the children".
It's not you who are doomed, it's the rest of the planet ;) . FWIW, the "movement" is much larger than any one person and shouldn't be dismissed because some people (actually none, really) are perfect. Also, supporting legislation is key, as that's where things are going to get done. So you can poo-poo tree huggers all you want and tell us that we're no better than you, but we support the legislation and you don't. BIG difference.

Let's make this clear to everyone......
If you have to get creative with spelling, spaces or symbols to get it to pass our profanity filters, it is not welcome here.
People have been banned from the site for this infraction before, and I'm not shy about it.

Legislation? now that is funny... ::stomping around circle going "more goverment will fix it" :: (I thinks you may forget that most of the reefs are outside US control, thank god..)

Yes, it will fix it. Do you think that major polluters and people who abuse reefs will just stop out of the kindness of their hearts? Heck no, there's money to be made. You're right, most reefs aren't in the US, but the ones that are ARE protected thanks to legislation. But, I wasn't talking exclusively about reefs, I was talking about the environment in general.
