I'm a bit confused with the Apex and other controllers...I plan on getting one so if I pick up an LED light light like a hydra 26 and a Ecotech powerhead whats the advantages? My point is electronics that come with controllers are they even worth it? Or should I go with a cheaper powerhead setup and light setup?

In general there is no need to control "modern" 3rd party LED fixtures or powerheads like you are speaking about from a reef controller.. There own built in controllers offer all you need.. for the most part..
Reef controllers may "extend" the functions of a built in controller to open up more "modes" of operation if they are lacking or for specific (less expensive/diy,etc..) led fixtures,etc.. that don't have their own controllers but do allow themselves to be controlled/dimmed,etc.. from an external device like a reef controller..
