Reef >> FOWLR Conversion Wish List

I've moved my smaller and reef safe fish to my 40g reef tank and am going to convert my 210g to a non-reef, well...except for the non-flashy corals fish never eat, semi-aggressive tank and would like to have the following fish in it but would like to get some initial feedback on the list before I begin all my research on the fish. I'd also appreciate recommendations of less aggressive fish within a species that might work well together.

In order of most wanted and not necessarily introduction to the system are:

Marine Betta
Sohal Tang
Lionfish
Powder Blue Tang
Pygmy Angels
- Potters
- Nox
- Lemonpeel
- Flame
Scorpionfish/Stonefish

Yes, I am aware that the 4 Angels MIGHT not co-exists but I do have other tanks they could be moved to. However, I did have two before (Nox and Golden) that got along fine. I later lost the Nox and a couple other fish that just went missing.:sad2:

The fish that are currently in the tank are:
- Blue Hippo Tang 4"
- Blue Reef Chromis 3"
- Clownfish 3"
- Fairy Wrasse 4"

since a beta is at the top of your list I wouldn't do the lion, sohal or scorpion/stone

-lion grow really fast & will more then likely eat the smaller peaceful fish you have
-sohal will get a foot long & have to much attitude for the fish you want like beta, chromis & some other
- scorpion/stone I think those might also run the risk of eating small fish

You could do a
-scopas, yellow, purple etc tang
-trigger like hawian/black durgeon, bluejaw or other whimpy trigger
-you could also probably get by with a larger angel -blueface etc

Really??

Really??

i dont know why we cant have a lion and a Betta(grouper) together.

i have 2 fuzzy lions and a marine betta together and no problems. granted they are all about the same size.

i would say:
Marine betta
lion
dwarf angel
couple yellow or purple tangs

IME you will have to have some time set aside to take car of the Betta and the lion

they will both need to be weaned off of live food.(my betta took the longest)

IME also that if you have fast swimmers in the tank with the lion and betta they will both just "hang" out. they will not swim much

if they are with other slow movers they will come out

my little lions are like tangs now lol

my betta look about 3 months before it was comfortable enough to come out when im around.

IMO the lion and the betta will get bullied in a tank with those tankmates

I have never owned a beta.... always thought they were a peacefull fish & didn't get very big? Didn't realize they were in the grouper family either :)

Lions can get 12-16in easily in captivity in a very short time. The last lion I had went from 4in to over a foot in about 18 months.... he was in a 150g.

My sohal has gone from 2 to 4+ inches in the 5ish months I have owned him, he's in a temporary 220g. I would not put one in a smaller tank then that especially with fish w/o attitudes or slow swimmers. These guys need at least a 8ft long tank to minimize their attitudes...... they also grow VERY fast!!!

I'd definitely drop the tangs from the list, as you've picked the most belligerent (sohal) and nervous (PB) of the family, esp. if you plan on keeping a lion and a betta.

Size-wise, unless you really want a volitans (there's nothing like a full grown volitans), I think you'll have some trouble with predation. Look into one of the medium-bodied species (Pterois mombassae, P. antennata, P. radiata) or even a mix of a couple of species. These fish stay a lot smaller than P. volitans. Or, as mentioned, look into a group of dwarf species lions (mix species or get a M-F-F trio of fuzzies).

To replace the tangs, I'd look into a foxface or rabbitfish. They're way less "pacy" and much more disease resistant.
