reef/invert safe eel?

hi there I was just wondering if there is an eel that is reef safe and will most likely not eat the cleaner shrimp, or small fish I plan on getting?
(pics would be helpful too...)

ok, not too thrilled on the high price... lol, what about a Zebra Moray?

I was reading on LiveAquaria.com (What I should have done before posting, sorry...), and it said this "The Zebra Moray Eel is an ideal moray for the community fish tank. It poses no threat to its tank mates or the aquarist, and is often out and about during the day rather than at night."

now, dose "tank mates" include inverts like shrimps, and crabs too?

pebbletooths(zebra) are going to eat your shrimp but will most likely ignore your fish. Piscivorous eels will tolerate shrimp but fish will be eaten.

I keep shrimp with my fimby and moringas- they often go entirely inside the eels mouth and clean, the eel shakes its head when its had enough and the shrimp scurry off. Dragon was the same way.

Vendor sites are not the best source for research. RC and wetweb are my go to sites.

This is the only pic I have of them in action. By the time I grab the camera they are normally done. I snagged this with my cellphone

Oh that sucks, so its either they eat shrimp and leave alone fish or the eat fish and leave alone shrimp... correct?

Holy Jesus!!! thats one really brave or dumb shrimp... lol

Your "fimby" im guessing is a Fimbriated eel right? (I've seen some eel posts before ;))
and that won't eat your inverts? How big of a fish would you say a Fimbriated eel can't eat?

eel

eel

i had a zebra for many years and didnt bother with shrimp or the smallest fish. he would eat starfish though

Fimbriated, correct.Fimby shares its tank with 5 fire and 3 cleaner shrimp and a few pepps that I occasionally see at night.

Eels can eat surprisingly large fish. My buddy needed a temporary home for a yellow tang. We figured it was way too big for the fimby to eat. I don't remember the tangs exact size but the fimby was ~1.5-2' for reference. It lasted less than a minute in the tank. Excuse pic quality, this happened quick.

This "death roll" seemed to crush the tang

Oh.... holy crap, well I was also planing on getting a bluejaw trigger, a blue tang, a pair of clowns and a goby/pistol shrimp pair... :/

Do you think that would happen with these fish?(obvoiusly to the smaller fish its a yes...) Do you think that I might be able to gat a eel that acts like JimmyFrag's?

Would the chances of this happening to adult size fish of some that i listed above?

my ghost ribbon does not eat fish or inverts. he is houses with an arrow crab. they have stupid small mouths so nothing will fit :o

So far my snowflake has taken out a yellow watchman goby no other fish. Although I do worry sometimes about my 6line at night.

Forget having any peppermint shrimp but he's left my skunk cleaner alone. My aiptasia are going nuts right now and I cant scheme up a good way to defeat them because 6-10 pep. shrimp last a week tops. I can say confidently though can not prove he is the reason several emerald crabs are gone but the large ones he shows no interest in......... yet.

The SFE is also quite a pain with knocking things over and just generally I don't think I'll ever put one in a reef again. Definitely plan to set up a 90g FOWLR with some soft corals and lion for him down the road.

I had a 2 foot snowflake for about a year untill i sold him so i could get a nano.

I had to super glue everything 2 to 3 times. He would knock everything over. But he was gentle. i could hand feed and hold him. Love that guy. If i ever got the chance to buy him again when i get another big tank i would. Eels are great

Generally if it is too big to be eaten, it may eat the eel. There is also the problem that even if the fish is to big to be eaten whole, bites often lead to death. this was a large corris wrasse one of my moringas sampled:

Look into G miliaris if you want a piscivorous moray and fish. The risk is still there but they are one of the less aggressive fish eaters..

Species tank with cheap, small fish(damsels) that you don't mind being eaten is the best plan.

the common name for G miliaris is a "GoldenTail Moray"... correct? And do you have pictures?

I know its "hit and miss" like you say, but do G miliaris typicly attack fish like triggers and other fast swimming fish?
also, Im not sure if this would make a difference, but Im planning to keep it in a 125 gallon...

Other than the that, I would love to keep an eel :)

I've also been doing some reading around the forum and I just wanted to ask, would a GhostRibbon eel(Pseudechidna brummeri) or a Chain eel(Echidna catenata) eat cleaners?

Brazil coloration- much more expensive and harder to find

Triggers should be fine but there are no guarantees. It doesn't matter if they are a fast swimmers, they get them while they sleep. I'd be cautious of any Echidna with shrimp, but I generally expect the worst.

That's about average for an online store. Ask your LFS to get a price on a "fire coral eel" from one of there vendors. All of my LFS's vendors refer to G. miliaris this way, it should be cheaper than an online store.

If you deal direct with a diver it will be much cheaper. Diver Tom has them for $50 when they are in stock-- http://divertom.com/Home.html
There are other divers that sell to the public but Tom is the only one that I have used and feel comfortable recommending.

All of the above refers only to the Caribbean version.
