KSDK-- Metro East voters are taking advantage of the opportunity to avoid long lines on November 4th. St. Clair County Election officials say 1700 ballots were cast, Saturday at O'Fallon City Hall and the county courthouse.
More than thirty states are allowing any registered voter to cast an early ballot this year, and with record turnout expected many election officials are encouraging early voting.
Patty Shevlin is St. Clair County Elections Supervisor.
"2006 was when we started early voting. It just really caught on, this election. The early voting has been a great asset to the election process. People have a chance to come in and vote early. And even though there has been lines, today, for over an hour... people have been happy enough to be able to stand in line just to be able to get it out of the way."
At about 3:30, the line went out of the city council chambers, into the lobby of city hall, out the front door, and down the sidewalk.
Letitia Slack was one of those waiting to exercise her Constitutional right.
"Because I remember 2004, we had to wait too long," said Slack. "I didn't want to do that, again."
Slack said this was not her first time in line.
"No, this is my third time, but the line was too long."
Shevlin was asked what the pre-Election Day turn-out tells her about what to expect, November 4th.
"That everyone's excited," said Shevlin. "The younger group has really been excited, but even people that are older have been, as well. And what I have found interesting is that people that have said, 'I haven't voted for a long time, but I wanted to vote in this election.'"
Shevlin said ballots cast between now and Election Day will be sealed in a canister, and locked in the court house. They will not be counted until Election Night, after the rest of us have voted.
Deputy County Clerk Dallas Alley said the voting machines are getting good reviews.
Alley said, "You hear from the older voters that it's easy to use, a lot better than what they used to have to vote with. The younger voters, they're used to technology."
Alley commented on how long the actual voting process takes, once a voter reaches the ballot machine.
"From my experience," Alley said, "it's taking 5-10 minutes."
Illinois voters in St. Clair County can vote early, Sunday, too, from 1-5:00, at O'Fallon City Hall. About a third of voters nationwide are expected to cast their ballots before Election Day.
