Reef Octo Extreme 200 Random Overflow

I have a Reef Octopus Extreme 200, about 18 months old. I have it setup in my sump in about 9" of water, stock pump and pinwheel. I generally have it set to skim pretty dry, and only need to empty the collection cup every 5 days or so. In the past 3 weeks, it has malfunctioned twice, over skimming and overflowing the collection cup. Any ideas what would cause it to operate so inconsistently?

Something is changing the (( and the proper term is escaping me right now )), how tense the water is -- allowing it to overflow the skimmer easier.

Are you adding anything different to the tank?
Or adding anything different to the room that the tank is in?

Certain additives, epoxy for mounting corals, etc and cause skimmers to go nuts.

I havent added anything or made any changes in the tank room or sump room. It was not a minor overflow. I have a tube from the collection cup to a 5 gallon bucket, andthe second occruance overflowed the 5 gallon bucket in under an hour.
