Reef Octopus Protein Skimmer Overflow..

I'm just curious to hear some additional brainstorming on this...

I have already done a search on protein skimmer overflow issues, and read them all.

I have a reef octopus protein skimmer which is quite large (and was a hassle even to get into the sump) and has the word "Diablo" written on the side of it. I can no longer remember the type it is and a web search shows maybe they don't make the exact one anymore. But whatever. It's big, reef octopus, and is rated for about 300 gallons if I recall.

This thing is overflowing constantly and has been for 4 days.

I did notice one thing. There is a chip on the bottom of the skimmer near where the plastic part meets the cone. If there is any water able to leak through there, could that cause this?

I have tried:

1) Ensuring that the intake is set to minimize bubble creation (duh)
2) Raising it up. (it is already above the water line though, and this seems to have no effect).
3) Taking out everything, cleaning thoroughly in vinegar, putting back in.
4) Desperation step. I put another skimmer -- a Bubble Magus Curve 7 -- in there. It has the exact same issue. This tells me it might be something with the water. However, this skimmer does sit a bit lower and wasn't really broken in or anything.

Important information: This is a new tank. 2 weeks old. An upgrade from my previous 135 gallon tank. I did have the tank professionally installed, and it would not surprise me if they put additives in the additional water they made for my tank. I had no control over that part. If so, how long does this stuff typically last? I have done 2 separate 35 gallon water changes since the install and additional "cleaning" that involved a 10 gallon water change.

Anyway, just curious for some thoughts on this.

My guess would be something is in the water. Like you stated, many additives can cause skimmers to overflow, ie...water conditioners, putties for attaching frags, chemi-clean (for cyano outbreaks) and others to. I once had a fish only system that I treated with chemi-clean and even with my skimmer turned down all the way it would still overflow. I had to pretty much do an 80% water change over the course of a few days and then the skimmer was happy again. You've changed out 70 gallons out of 135 total so I would think that if anything was in the water is should be close to out. Are you treating the change water with a conditioner that is not skimmer friendly? An example would be stress coat, they have a couple different versions. One that is skimmer friendly and one that is not. If so, you may be fighting against yourself. GL, I'm sure things will settle down.
