Reef Octopus Skimmers

I apologize in advance for the rant, but has anyone else spent a buttload of money on one of these skimmers and been highly disappointed?

I have the XP1000sss Space saving in sump skimmer and this thing has been a debacle ever since I bought it. I bought this thing back in 2012 and while I realize that 4 years ago is quite a while, when you spend 350 bucks on a skimmer youd expect it to last significantly longer.

This thing has never worked as advertised with its well documented problems with it randomly overflowing. After spends loads of time online reading what other people have done to adjust it to get it to work right, I added an air valve on it and after fine tuning that the thing finally started skimming like a champ.

Now here I am a year or so later and the bubble blaster pump is randomly shutting off on me. Ive cleaned the thing several times and it continues to happen. I completely took it apart and soaked it in vinegar, then ran the skimmer in the vinegar solution for two days, cleaned it and reinstalled the thing and pefecto it finally looked like everything was gonna be ok. Now two weeks later the same thing has happened again and Im faced with either buying a whole new skimmer bc Im tired of dealing with it or rolling the dice one more time and buying a new impeller for the pump, which shocker is going to set me back $80

I decided to double down and buy the new impeller, but if this doesnt work, needless to say, if I havent reached that point already, reef octopus products will never get any of my money ever again!

Sorry for your misfortunes. I've had nothing but success with my RO skimmers but I'm only 2 years in with my 110 classic and a few months with my 150 prime int.
My 110 has run pretty much flawlessly with no maintenance other than cleaning the cup. At almost 2 years it finally started to act up a bit but a quick cleaning of the pump (aquatrance and not BB) cured that problem.

I have to 110int classic as well and it works like a champ. 1 year in only but haven't had any issues with it whatsoever. Might be time for a new pump, RO doesn't make the pumps and 4 years doesn't sound like too bad of a life for a small pump.

Sounds like you might have a defective pump. I have had no issues with my RO skimmer. The thing has worked flawlessly for 4 years now. All I do is empty the cup, and occasionally clear the salt creep from the air lines.

yeah thats all ive had to do over the past year until this started happening, it had been working great after I installed the air valve to fine tune the air intake. I'm hoping youre wrong about the pump bc that would mean I just wasted $80 on a new impeller

I had a SRO-1000 internal, worked great for me. The key was getting it in only about 7" of water, just under the label. It was running on my 180 for months and did a good job.
