Reef rash

Reef rash. Know what I mean? In some sick way I'm proud to admit I have it. But my hand (singular at the moment) is killing me. Besides keeping my hand out of the water (not gonna happen) what's a reefer to do??? TIA!

Duct tape? Rubber Band? Shoulder High Glove.

I have a ton of the shoulder high disposable types. I tried the reusable chemical gloves - they stunk too bad after a couple uses where a little water got inside and I was too lazy to clean them. The disposable ones are much easier to use and a quite a bit cheaper.

I prefer the the reusable, personally.

If they do get a little wet, I just turn them inside out and let them dry.

The disposables work well too, just not as cost effective

I've had very painful fingertips for over a week with little white spots where the pain is. It sucks, but i know now to look where i grab the rock from now on. Reefs present a very real danger to us in our homes, and with the constant development and random things we find in them, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Buy some gloves and prevent any further problems. Besides, if you give up reefing you can use the gloves for horse exams!!!:rollface:

Wicked nasty thread there dots. Underscores the need to take precautions. I have shoulder style re-usables that I don't use 'cause frankly I can't feel anything and it totally blows the mood. Deja vu all over again? Mike, where do you get your horse gloves?

I used to get "reef rash" on my forarms when the tank was new....now I only notice it like rafael, when the water need to be change. I typically don't wear gloves when working with corals or when doing water changes..but I do make sure I don't have any open cuts or anywhere where bacteria could take hold. I only wear gloves when working with the rock..even though stings from corals and even bristel worms don't even phase me anymore...I just get freaked out about what could be under the rocks that I've never seen, and I don't want anymore puncture wounds from handeling the rock..

Never had 'reef rash' as described above, but second what 'matttaylor' said since I've scraped myself pretty good on liverock when I was aquascaping my tank and on those little sand-paper rough sponges.

I use latex gloves with rubberbands on my wrists while working in the tank cleaning and especially fragging.

Also long periods with my arm in the tank gives me sunburns on my forearms from the lights.

^ i grew up in the country. what you just described is not reef rash - it's a horses willie
