was at the LFS yesterday, and they tried to sell me an angel. he didn't know the full name as "it was a new shipment". it was small, (he claimed it wouldn't get bigger than the 3" specimen he had) and that it was reef-safe and non-aggressive. it was gray with black stripes. full of ***? or is this true? any ideas on which specific one this is? i'd recognize it if i saw a pic.

I wouldn't trust a sales person at a LFS that can't remember names. Do your own research first. So, good for you for not buying it.

There are pygmy angels that are mostly reef safe, but there are scattered reports of individual offenders. These are the flame angel and coral beauty, but you need to monitor them so they don't destroy your entire tank if they turn out to be a brat.

There are some other angels that are reef safe from the south pacific, but they are expensive at the $400 range. I think a gold speckled angel is one of these.

may be this guy

Behavior: The Eibli adapts well to the aquarium environment, but should be provided with a number of hiding spaces as it is a shy species. Because of its shy nature, it should be kept with other non-aggressive tank mates.
Recommended Tank size: Provide a 30 gallon or larger tank. The Eibli Angel can be kept successfully in reef type aquaria, but usually do not survive in fish-only aquariums. This is commonly due to specialized diet requirements that reef aquaria provide, in the way of naturally occurring micro-crustacean populations, but in some cases, may simply be due to the more complete natural ecosystem found in reef tanks. It should have large amounts of live rock for hiding and grazing.
Food and diet: Diet and Feeding Herbivore, grazer, offer algae and/or sponge based prepared diets and lots of algae.
Level of Care: Moderate
Reef Compatibility:Reef Aquarium Compatibility Generally safe, but may nip at corals, clams, etc.

I just got that angel. The Eibli. He's beautiful, but has a cloudy eye right now. Its very true he's shy! He's found a cave and wanders around in it, rarely leaving. Ive caught him nipping at the rocks a few times.

He's got quite the personality (really went HARD at a yellow tang that came close to his cave, and put a clown in his place!), and assuming the cloudy eye clears up, I'm looking forward to having this scrapper for a very long time.

I have a coral beauty that has not given me any grief. I have also heard that Flame angels are hit and miss. I think that some angels just depend on their personality. For example, some coral beauty angels might pick at corals, but some coral beauties may not. it just depends on the fish.
