My LFS swore those were diphreutes?
Sorry about bad pics... First one was at store, 2nd in display...

Thanks in advance,
Steve

even if they are diphreutes i would be very careful in a mixed reef i have one that i bought a while back from p.i.a & it ate a brain & a scolly but hasn't touched anything else they grow super quick

I hear you man!! I have a monster Hippo Blue Tang that picks on Open Brains... Welso's to be exact... You never know...

Curious if anyone else thinks these are the non reef species??
So far they are eating very well and only picking on rocks and sand....

Too hard to tell to be 100% sure from the pics, try to get one of a full side shot of the fish. The two in question a very similar to one another

So it turns out I got 3 fish, the one big one of the group wasn't reef safe... They were sold to me as a trio and I was made to believe they were all the reef safe kind... The one big guy started womping on my corals.. Picked at palys and alveopora day 1!!!!

I quickly trapped him and he will live in my sump... If you look closely his back black anal torso comes down on a 45 degree angle, which matches the non reef safe pics, the others have straight back black torsos....
Turns out I called the lfs and the suspect fish and the 2 others were from different batches and he said the suspect fish was in his private reef with mixed corals similar to mine..,, ooooooooook

Trying day!!

Well at least you figured it out before it ate entire frags or colonies! Sounds like the LFS should take back and give back your money

Oh yeah!!! So I took the fish back last night and exchanged it for a another RS Diphreutes... He is swimming around with the other 2... The trio has yet to pick at anything but rocks and they are eating mysid like crazy.

I gotta tell you. These are beautiful fish... When they school they put on a very playful display with the other fish!!

Very happy!!
Here is the Trio

So I've had 2 of the 3 in my tank for 48 hours, one for 24. They are cruising around the tank being very social with much larger fish... They are cleaning other fish and picking at rocks all day, and they school together about 75% of the time...

Sound like the right behavior??
The other fish I returned was picking at corals within 1-2 hours... These guys seem much more peaceful and look like the reef safe kind...

If they are schooling together it isn't a for sure thing but that coupled with cleaning fish and not eating your corals I would say you have 3 winners!
